Galaxy S1 on eclair

Hey Guys,
Apologies if there is a thread about this,im writing this for my father who has galaxy s1 still on eclair, we are trying to get his data from his card / phone into kies maybe or just onto his pc but we cannot get the usb connection to work, the drivers dont seem to install, so I ticked USB debugging in development, the drivers install but then we still cant see the phone on pc or connect to kies, what am i doing wrong or any help please..?

Hey, there is no easy way to go about it as Kies is a bit poo.

What type of data do you want to backup?

Have you tried connecting the phone to the PC without Samsung Kies being open?
Have you uninstalled Samsung Kies and the USB drivers when prompted, then tried re-installing Kies?
Have you updated Samsung Kies itself?
Also make sure the screen is unlocked and check the notification bar for more options when connecting to a PC.
On the S1 you may have to select Samsung Kies Mode before attempting to connect to Kies.

Since you are having trouble with the USB connection on of the better things to do would be to avoid that route altogether...hoping that your dad has WiFi, you could connect via WiFi.

I also created this guide for backing up stuff, some bits do not require Kies and some bits can be done over the Wifi.

Kies Air (on the Galaxy device) will allow you to connect via WiFi and transfer media to your PC.

Thanks for the advice, I will take a look at the guide after this, basically he wants to get his photos and contacts from his phone, but I know he has had problems just trying to get anything to read his card in the past.
Kies was up to date, but I know how annoying it is used it once or twicein 2 years for my S2 . I will persevere and try a few things. With usb debugging unticked the driver just fails, tick it and it is ok, but look on the pc and the phone does not show up. Do I need to select something on the phone to engage mtp application, I didn't check that.

Now may be a good time to transfer all his contacts to his Google account rather than stored on the phone/sim, so they are safer and have more options to store details.

There are multiple apps for connecting via wifi to transfer data or you could create a google drive account which gives 5gb free cloud storage with cheap storage upgrade options.

Thanks for your help got sorted, deleted kies and anything I could find samsung related on his pc, started again from scratch and worked o.k. so not sure what but he is happy now,thx for your advice, need to get it updated now from eclair if he will let me
