    Hello all...

I have just found these forums and completed registration, so thought I would introduce myself.

I spent some 30 years in the RAF and then continued in the aircraft industry for another 17. Not long retired and love playing golf. Main hobbies are computing (since 1980) and photography.

I have only just got my first Android phone (Galaxy S2). Upgraded from BB and various other types and makes.

I want to read these forums to find out as much as I can. I hear words like "Rooting" but have no idea what they mean!!

I still have an original iPad (sorry!) which does exactly what I want. I will not be upgrading to either the next iPad or, the rumoured, iPad mini.

    Hope this isn't too long...!

Welcome and what a good first choice for an android phone.
You can either stay with updates via Kies, or do what many on here do, and install firmware of your choice.
A few useful numbers to dial on your phone:
*#1234# = firmware on your phone
*#7465625# = Check the phone lock status

If you are going to flash firmware, then your phone should be unlocked.
Rooting is very useful to have full control over your phone. For example you can do a complete backup (nandroid) to mirror your existing one, also remove system apps by installing the Titanium backup app.

You can sit next to me, I have no idea what all these people are talking about either.
I could be wrong, I usually am. (Because it's only a phone)

Thanks to you both for your replies.

I already have Kies and have backed up to it. I have also used it to transfer a few videos and photos from my computer to the phone.

Until I find out more, I think it best to leave things as they are! Last thing I want is a brick.
