    Turning off SMS alerts

I'm getting the voice stating "New message from..." whenever an SMS comes in. I have my Notifications volume to the lowest yet the "New message from..." just screams out. I'd rather I don't receive the voice notification, just the red dot on my screen will do. Is there a way to turn off SMS voice notifications? I couldn't find the "switch" in either phone Settings or Messaging settings.

The phone shouldn't speak to you unless it's in Talk back mode or Driving Mode.

Check under Menu > Settings > Accessibility > Make sure Talk Back is not ticked.

Driving mode (at least on the S3) is on the pull down notification bar on the far right.

Thanks for the response. The phone was in Driving Mode. I couldn't find the pull down notification bar, but was able to uncheck Driving Mode in settings:

Settings > Voice input and output > Text-to-speech settings > Disable Driving mode

And that seems to have done the trick - I now get SMS messages without the "voice" announcing them.

When the screen is unlocked touch the top of the screen (the status bar with your time and signal on) and drag your finger down to the bottom. As you do this you should see a black screen slide down. This holds all your notifications when you receive sms, IM, missed calls etc.
