Hardware Id Missing

I have GS2 running 4.0.4 and I am having problems with Kies 2.3.312085_7. I want to back up my phone to do a factory reset because it keeps freezing unexpectedly.

When I connect phone I get the error message "Hardware Id Missing".

I have removed and reinstalled Kies but still get the same message. On the one occasion I didn't get this error message I got “Reconnect the device in Samsung Kies (PC Studio) mode. Current connection mode not supported by Kies”.

Can anyone help?

Check USB debugging in developer settings. All 4.04 has device id set to 000000000000. Sammy are supposed to be fixing this issue.

This happened to me since I updated Kies. What works for me:
Go to settings -> more (under data usage) -> USB Utilities -> connect storage to PC -> OK
Windows now does recognise the phone and you can browse the phone as a drive. Kies will give you an error.
Turn off USB Storage, disconnect the phone.
Take out the USB cable and put it back in and Windows should detect the phone properly now and Kies will recognise it too.

Great post man!! Solved my problem :-) Then again, next time i connect my S2 to my PC, the problem comes again...
Is there any permanent solution, other than stop using Kies?
