I still marvell at how robust the Galaxy S is. A couple of weeks ago mine was left in a pair of jeans that went into the washing machine. The cycle was a 40 degree wash that lasted 1 hour and 8 minutes.
Of course when the phone was found in the bottom of the washing machine I didnt hold much hope.
2 weeks later I now have a fully working Samsung Galaxy S and havent paid a penny for parts or repairs. I did spend £1.50 on a toothbrush..LOL
Heres How.
First I did the Obvious as recommended by everyone : Took out the battery and put the phone in a plastic bag with some rice and tied the top up. The day after I went on holiday so the phone was left this way for 10 days.
When I returned from holiday I removed the phone from the bag of rice. It was still completely dead. No signs of life and when plugged into USB the PC said the USB device could not be recognised.
After this I decided to take the phone appart and see what I could see. This is quite easy. Remove the back. Remove the battery and then remove the 7 small crosshead screws with a jewlers screwdriver. Then prize off the back casing. You could use one of the plastic lever tools you get with case kits. I managed to do it with just my fingers. Inside at the top of the phone there is a circuit board which I believe is the mother board? Anyway there are several ribbon cables plugged into it. I unplugged all these and then managed to remove this circuit board. On the underside there is a large silver heat shield covering most of the circuit board. I prized this off as its just held by clips.
On inspection of this circuit board I found a white corrosion substance on many of the terminals and plug sockets. To remove this corrosion I used a medium toothbrush (new and dry obviously). Once I was happy the board had had a good brushing I re-assembled the phone the reverse of above.
Now I tried the phone. Hey presto. The phone powed up BUT got stuck at the Illuminated circle icon that comes on before the battery. I left It a while but hey still stuck. Hmm What next?
Well I thought the phone has power so I plugged it into the PC. The PC recognised the phone. So I tried to reboot the phone into download mode. The phone did boot into download Mode!! YAY!
After getting the phone booted into download mode I thought why not try reloading the FIrmware with Odin. I used ODIN version 1.7. last official JVU firmware and ticked all three options in Odin (Re-Partition etc).
The firmware flashed the phone restarted and now works perfectly.
So a phone that spent over one hour in a washing machine is fixed with a £1.50 toothbrush!!!!
If you have sent your phone for a swim why not try this? It may not work and you could do more damage but if it does work you have saved yourself a lot of money.
Update after a few days off use the Microphone has stopped working. Why now I dont know. Anyway have on order a new lower cable assy' (cost around 7 quid with postage.) will see how it goes and update.
