Yes, that's what I do. Untick packet data and data roaming, keep in airplane mode. Wifi works but no risk of using data. You won't get calls or texts, but seeing as you'll be charged for receiving them, why would you want to? And the battery lasts for ever. Changing the APN settings seems way over the top to me.

If you dont wanna be out of contact but really dont trust your phone, we have a phone in Europe called the MotoFone. It costs 10 pounds English. It has no data, GPS or Wi-fi. It does calls and texts. Its like cell phones were like 20 years ago...Only smaller...With the Switching Sim method its brilliant...They are very rugged too, so if your planning on drinking lots of beer and falling down some steps it will be the only thing un-damaged at the bottom
