Can someone tell me what this is for and what it does? Couldn't find it in the users manual.

It turns off all the radio functions so that you can use your phone on an aircraft without interferring with the flight systems. Also useful for quickly turning off phone (but still having power on for fast access if required), overnight for example. Phone will use very little battery in this mode. You can still play games, listen to music, read books etc.....

For situations when you shouldn't use a cellular type signal, on an aeroplane for example. It disables the phones connectivity, so no calls, texts, mms, data etc. Wifi should still work though.

Makes your phone fly around the room. Don't, obviously, use this feature outside unless you have it tethered, a piece of string will suffice. (see tethering option)

Then this should be an even better way to prevent roaming charges abroad. Has anyone tested the parameters abroad to prevent roaming, unchecking roaming and data. I know that you do so Tufftoad. Is it trust worthy?

Will airplane mode be a nuisance when using a GPS like CoPilot or Sygic?

Just to be sure before I leave for Europe, what is the best and sure way that my phone will only use data and roaming when I am on wifi. If there's anything else beside the mentioned ones above.

When I go abroad I always delete my APN settings, this way I KNOW know I will not incur any roaming charges.

When I get back I create a new APN and put the name in and the phone brings up the correct settings

Edit: I only use the airplane mode on the plane in case anyone calls.

Do you want to block calls and texts as well or just data. There is a check box for data roaming that I always leave off. Just to be sure I also turn off data completely. You can still use wifi without data being on, and calls/texts will still work.

I only use aeroplane mode when in one.

If you want belt, braces and string then use an app to block data in tandem with the above.

APN = Access Point Names and found in Settings - Wireless and Network - Mobile Networks
The settings here are provided by your Network Operator for you to access their data stream.
