My phone is fine again after the reset, I've never found the need to do a reset before, the phone worked fine after updating to ICS, seems a bit strange to me that updating from 4.0.0 to 4.0.4 would cause problems requiring a reset while updating 2.x.x to 4.0.0 worked fine without a reset, I suppose the problem with 4.0.4 could be caused by not doing a reset after a major update like ICS.

I tried selecting ALL items to back up in Kies but it was having none of it, causing the USB connection to be lost, Kies to crash and an error message on the phone. I had to back up each item individually, the Phone Log and one other item IIRC just wouldn't back up, fortunately the data I couldn't backup wasn't that important.

If you log into Google Play on your computer all the apps you have purchased will be there, just click install to send them to your phone. You will have to search for any free Apps you had installed.

When ever there's an update to the phones firmware, whether it's from GB or ICS it's always a good move to do a wipe data/factory reset after every update, it just makes sure there isn't anything left of the previous version, and it avoids any conflicts between old and new versions.

I do a wipe data/factory reset before and after every update, this gives a clean install.
Sorry, one more question before I wipe my phone. If I have apps like checklists, and favourites and bookmarks for navigator etc, how do those get restored? Do they come back when I restore using Kies? Or shouldn't I be using Kies so that I don't pull back into the brand new reset phone anything that may be causing problems?

Yes, I had exactly the same USB locking up problems. I kept having to unplug the cable and plug it back in again. After doing one by one backup, I narrowed the problem down to the phone log. In other words, I could select all minus the phone log and the backpu worked. Strange or what!!

Well a quick update. I proceeded with a full factory reset. I took a while to get my phone back into the configuration/layout that I like but everything is up and running again. The bluetooth problem has gone away and also the candyspacemedia icon that was causing problems.

HOWEVER, I'm still having problems with the data network dropping out. In fact, immediately after the factory reset, it couldn't access the network in order to access my Google Account, and had to wait until I set up the WiFi before it would connect. I'm really not sure what to do now.

Observations: I bring up the internet browser and try to access the google home page but it times out with an error, suggesting I check my data connection. I try several times but still it won't connect. If I then go to Mobile Data settings and switch mobile data off and then on again, it works fine (at least for a while and then the connection disappears again).

Is anyone else experiencing this problem and is there a fix?

    Richard

It's probably your APN settings. Google your networks APN settings or phone them and they can send them to you in a text message that you read and then delete.

To find your APN's: menu>settings>more>Mobile networks>Access Point Name.

I upgraded to ICS (v4.0.3), did the wipe data/reset, but now I get a message that says "Unfortunately, TwLauncher has stopped". I have tried resetting the phone again, but I get the same message. I cannot get into the phone settings or launch any menus, apps, browsers from the phone, nor make any calls. I cannot even go to the Google play store on my desktop to download another launcher because it no longer recognizes my device since the reset and will not allow me to download any apps.

I have all of my data backed up with KIES, but restoring the data does not change anything because of the stopped TwLauncher.

Help!!! My phone is as useless at this point.

I would just flash the firmware myself again using Odin, download the firmware from SamMobile.com. Dial *#1234# which will give you the firmware you need, then match it with one on SamMobile. I'm sure people here will give you hand if you have questions.

Edit: This won't effect your warranty and should also solve the problem. You can then restore data using Kies etc.

I don't really understand what you mean. I cannot access anything on my phone in its current state without TwLauncher.

Tufftoad is saying to manually flash new firmware using odin, because it sounds like your update has some how become corrupted.

You can find firmware's at sammobile.com along with the flashing program odin. Yes it's a pain, but it's probably the only way to get your phone back and working, or you could just contact samsung and ask them to arrange for it to be sorted out, which will mean taking it to CPW.

There is one thing you can try, go to menu>settings>applications>all>scroll down the list until you find TWLauncher and tap on it, then tap on clear data, that should clear any problems and reset it.
