how do i stop phone ringing when receiving sms

Had an S2 for a couple of weeks but cannot figure out how to stop the phone ringing when a text message is received. Previous phones I have had just require either a swipe or any button to be depressed but the S2 just goes on and on until you actually read the message. Any advice would be appreciated.

I've never had that, the message is usually a short tone.
Go to settings,sounds..the default notification is the message tone, that must have been set at some time to a ringtone.
Tap that and then choose a more suitable tone from the list.

In Messaging press left menu button and then choose settings.
Scroll to bottom where you will find the choice to have a notification and below that the notification sound you want.

Thanks for responses but I had already changed the notification tone to a personalised one (as per greenman suggested) but had not thought it would affect the ability to change how the tone is switched off when a message is received. Seems strange as the phone ring turns off with one screen swipe.

Ummm!! Perhaps the message is arriving but not installing, hence the repeated tone.
Grasping at straws for this one, but could it be your message inbox is full?
Another thought is to re-establish your network link by turning off phone and removing sim and battery.
Leave for 10 minutes before replacing and rebooting.
This should give you a clean network link, in case that is the problem.
