Custom status bar

As of recent, I've discovered the wonders of having a custom launcher. After using TW launcher for almost an year, I switched to ADW launcher and am a lot happier. However, I'm also not too glad with the default status bar. So I was wondering if there are any custom ones I could get the same way, with more customization options and features.

Things to note: My SGS is not rooted and I can't / don't plan to change that. I was surprised that custom launchers don't require root. Although the status bar appears to be its own process, I'm hearing people say that root is required to disable the default one in order to replace it. I hope custom bars can kill the original process without the need of hacking. Also, since I'm an open-source fan and wanna keep all software I use as such, I'd like a FOSS application (that's why I use ADW Launcher and not LauncherPro).

Does any such thing exist? Or do you need root and / or it's impossible to create custom status bars for Android at this day?

I THINK I tried that. But if it's the one I think I did, it failed at killing the default status bar without root.
