Go inti settings and USB and make sure USB debugging is NOT ticked. If it is ticked, that is probably why kies isn't picking up the phone.

You won't be able to update from 2.3.3 to ICS via Kies anyway as you missed out on 2.3.4 or 5. You can however, flash with Odin which is much quicker than Kies and just as easy.

Pretty much divided 50:50 if you are missing out.
Gingerbread suits the S2 very well, and visually you would see very little difference if you change to ICS.
But why shouldn't you try it yourself?
If your phone is not being recognised when connected it's probably driver problems.
You can install drivers without Kies, and then install your Orange ICS with a programme called Odin.

For the driver, are you on a Mac or PC, and which version?

What was added to or improved on later versions? Im using windows 7 on the pc im trying to use the kies with. I dont understand how its a driver problem as i can access the phone fine through the computer, no issues. Its kies that wont connect to it, i see lots of people have problems with it. Seems samsung really let them selfs down with kies.

    Thanks
    Phil

Can you not update OTA, as with over S2 phones, or is it missing or just doesn't want to update that way either.

In which case, unless you want all the O2 bloatware, I'll try using odin/Heimdall

    A little assistance needed:

So I'm currently at work and can't spend too much time not working. I have to flash an S2 that was on 2.3.3 and has soft bricked (can still get into download mode). nothing has been done with the phone, so no root, custom roms or lag fixes etc.

    Questions:
    Can I flash I9100BVLPD (4.0.3) over 2.3.3?
Is there anything I should be aware of, more so than the SGS 1 flashing procedure?
What version of Odin should be used to flash 4.0.3?

Now I'm just looking for some links that my company allows my PC to access

Same process as S1. Only flash open FW to an already open phone (I haven't looked what BVLPD is).
Try Odin ver 1.83 first if no good try 1.85.

    Ta RichH.

I9100BVLPD is 4.0.3 for UK locked T-Mobile network, so not flashing Open Firwmare.

Got Odin, think I'm going to have to have a word with a contact in IT to allow permission to download the firmware from a file sharing site.
