    For me:

When accessing Recovery/download mode I always start with the phone off.
When going into recovery I press and hold the buttons until the recovery menu appears (starting with Vol+, then the home button and finally the Power button - Keep all three pressed).

It is possible that there is no built in recovery mode (I have come across this before). You will need to flash CWM via Odin if this is the case.......

ClockWorkMod recovery. You need to flash it with Odin as you won't be able to flash it from recovery mode. After installing this you will have an option to boot to recovery from an app called ROMManager.

The cache only contains latent files and some settings, such as user names, passwords etc, actual hard data will only be lost if you do a factory reset.

What version of Odin are you using? Should be 1.83 or 1.85 for S2 but I notice 1.87 is now released but I haven't tried it yet.....
