You could always dual boot it so you can switch between stock and F1....

    ****************UPDATE*********************

Thought it was only fair I updated this thread in the spirit of credit where credit it due

This morning I updated my firmware to 4.0.4 - this went completely smoothly, no error messages, bricking, resets, reboots, or cache clearing required.

It was done via USB and Kies

and now my screen is perfectly responsive (to first and every subsquent touch)

So much so, I have reinstated my pattern lock and it appears to work everytime

Thought this may be of interest/use to those of us affected.
