Sorry if I am super noob with this.
My current firmware is I9000DXJF4, so from the tutorial I should flash it with anything that has I9000DX_ _ _.
I have flashed my galaxy s with I9000DXJF4 provided from samsung-firmware.com, and I assume that is the original firmware because it boots up with the same screens and is still currently branded.
Which firmware should I flash with to debrand it?

    Hi all,

Sorry for another noob question, but I just picked up Galaxy S (Australia) and it has DTJF1 (Phone) & DTJF3 (PDA).
Can I flash with the newer XWJG3 or will that ruin my phone? It is mentioned above to only flash with firmware of the same country code, why is that?

because sometimes the upgrade from one countries firmware to another might try to upgrade, or add on to features only included in previous versions of that countries firmware, so flashing from JF5 to XWJG3, the XWJG3 file might try to edit a file you could only find in XWJG2. anyway thats the jist of it, but i havent had any problems flashing from one country's firmware to another, with the exception of custom roms, but theyre a special case.

omg i hope i didnt just brick my phone..
i followed the instructions and was able to flash succesfully
but when the phone booted up
    in manual mode
i get the options: reboot system now, apply sdcard:update.zip, wip data/factory reset, wipe cache partition.
i selected the first - reboot
but after the rreboot and the splash screen, my screen remained dark/black..

Strange, it doesn't normally reboot to recovery mode after firmware flashed. It looks like the system has been corrupt therefore it cannot boot the phone up so it stays in the recovery mode and when you try reboot in recovery mode, it cannot load the system thats why it stay black. You could try re-flash the firmware again. That should correct the system files.

im like an expert in messing up the flashing process.. just reflash the firmware again, and this time leave the phone plugged in until the phone reboots on its own to the home screen, if it takes you to the reboot system now screen, hit 'reboot system now' and again leave it plugged into the computer until it gets to the home screen.

if it still refuses to accept the firmware, then id suggest adding in the CSC file, and if THAT doesnt work, flash a different firmware..

Hi, this is my first post and I am a new android user. I thought this would be the right place to get some help. I still don't understand the advantage of flashing new firmware. I mean, what exactly is "FLASHING NEW FIRMWARE" ? Does is change anything on your android device ? Thanks in advance.

flashing is just a way of saying like 'putting on'? lol something like that. when you flash a new firmware, its usually because the newer firmware has more updated software, to make the phone faster, better gps, fix bugs, add new features, ect. the difference isnt huge, but saving a few seconds here and there really adds up. some firmwares have big updates, that really change the phone.
you could probably use the original firmware the whole time you have your phone and be happy, but if you go out of your way to order a powerhouse like the Galaxy S from over seas, then you probably care about having your phone work at its very best. thats what these firmwares do. the custom firmwares really add the biggest improvements, so look around at each firmwares changelogs, and see if any of the new updates appeal to you.
i suggest modaco R2 , its the best firmware in my opinion

Thanks a lot man...really appreciate that. From all the posts I have been following, I see that all the guys on this forum are really generous. I m starting to love this place.

EDIT: Hey, one quick question. If I root my phone and use any firmware, would I stop getting official OTA updates (I live in Canada) ?
