That method seems more complicated and I didn't really understand the instructions. I am a real novice at this and would hate to wipe out my phone. I am trying to keep things really simple. The only reason i want to root my phone is to calibrate my battery and get better life out of it on ICS.

You need to extract all the files in the zip file.

But honestly, Odin is great for firmware update, but for rooting go for the RicH link.

Could you direct me to a link with clearer instructions using the ClockworkMod? I am not clear if that is all I need or if I need to download all 3 files mentioned in Rich's link. Perhaps there is a YouTube video that shows the process step by step.

As for the Odin Zip file, there are no other files to unzip. I am at a loss from where to extract those files you mentioned.

Don't need to root to sort out battery, but if having problems with ICS you do need to go into Recovery Mode to factory reset and clear cache.
This will clean up your ICS and will improve battery life.
If no other problems with your ICS go to 'battery'
    Otherwise, first of all:
    1. Go to Settings > back up and reset and tick
    Back up my data
    Automatic restore

You can also connect to Kies and take a backup there for extra security and to save contacts and sms.

    2. Press and hold volume up + Home button + Power button until in blue Recovery screen
    3. Use Volume key to hilight 'wipe data/factory reset' and power button to select
    4. Use Volume key to hilight 'wipe cache partition' and power key to select.
    5. No 'Reboot system now'
    6. Your phone will be as purchased, but with ICS, so you will have to put in your WiFi password, and Google address once more.
    7. Your apps will be installed via the google restore, so give it time.

    Battery:
To improve your battery you need to run the phone until it turns itself off.
Now with phone off, fully charge.
Run phone again until it turns itself off and recharge in 'off' mode.
This will reset your charging chip.

I would advise doing both of above, but understand that factory reset is a big step so can do later if no improvement.

Thanks, that was very helpful. Ever since I upgraded to ICS, my battery life has dropped from approx. 24 hours to around 12 hours. Display is listed as the biggest culprit even though it is off most of the time.

I downloaded an app to calibrate the battery, but the phone needs to be rooted in order to run the app. This is the main reason I want to root my phone.

I will try the quick fixes you mentioned before doing a factory reset. Is there any other way to clear the cache of junk and old apps?

Is it possible that Odin3 v1.85 is not compatible with Windows 7?

I wrote this tutorial for ICS upgrade and battery calibration http://samsunggalaxysforums.com/show...secret+success
You can go into recovery mode and just choose the "Clear cache" option without doing a factory reset....

Thanks, Rich. I will read throuhg your tutorial and also reset the battery chip as outlined above by Greenman. Hopefully, the combination of the two wili improve the battery life without having to reset the phone to Factory Settings.

    But, I still wish I knew why I can't load Odin3....gosh darn!!! ;-)

    May be a driver problem.
Take a look here for a solution:

PS Also make sure you don't have Kies running - they don't like each other.

I don't think Windows 7 can be run in XP mode. I tried running Odin as Administrator but that did not help. I still can't find those extracted files you mentioned earlier. Perhaps you can send me a link to your version of Odin3 v1.85.
