    Rookie problems

I finaly got my S3 2 days ago. I've been playing with it and I'm beginning to find my way around, sometimes mostly stumbling on the solution !!!

I had an old motorola, one of the first that I could use around the world while travelling. I'm from the "stone age" of mobile LOL

I will probably bother you with very basic questions in the coming days, so please bear with me.

    1) I would appreciate all the tips for travelling abroad to prevent financial disaster. I have alredy installed Skype which will help on calling home.

    2) I am unable to install my gmail on the system. I have checked and re-checked my password etc. everything works fine on the computer but everytime I enter it on the phone I get the message that something is wrong with either my password or email address. I also have "waiting for synchronisation".
Now I looked in the "personal" and "synchronisation" to add it to the list, but it isn't there.

I'm a french-speaking Quebecer, and my language on the S3 is in french so maybe sometime the wording won't be the same, so just ask me.

    Thanks everyone

    Welcome to the android world.
    Re; your questions:
    1. I'm a traveller too so my tips are:
    a) Use a local sim card as most networks charge not only to send , but also receive calls.
    b) On your phone press Menu > Settings > .... More > Mobile networks and make sure Use packet data and Data roaming are NOT ticked.
    c) Use WiFi wherever possible, and under Setings > Wi-Fi >press menu > Advanced and tick Network notification so that your phone informs you of an open network.

    2. Just to check that you are trying to get Gmail using the Gmail application and not the Email application?
If for some reason you do not have it on your phone, get it here: http://www.google.com/mobile/gmail/
When you first started your phone were you asked to put in your Gmail details?
It is case sensitive, but other than that should be straightforward.

As usual you put the majority of English first language users to shame with your excellent command of english.

    Thanks Greenman,

Manage to do everything you mentionned in #1. To be honest, I had to change the language to english to be sure.

As far as the Gmail, nothing works! The icon is there with the apps and when I click on it there's a page with "waiting to be synchronized". But it isn't available in the list with the other program that I can synchronize.

No I wasn't asked for the Gmail details.

That's nice of you to compliment my english, but you will see occasionally weird spelling, and if you heard me speak you would notice my background french...

    Hi Greenman,

I'm beginning to be good with the S3, although I still struggle on some things. Not too bad for my first smartphone LOL

I bought CoPilot Live North America and it's much better than the trial version. I use it as often as I can and I'm beginning to like it more. Did show a few errors, saying to turn left when it's not allowed, but overall it gets me where I want to go. I bought the Premium Europe today and entered all the places we will be staying in the favorites for our coming trip. I bought it because of your experience with it.

    Here's my rookie question:

How do I transfer my photos to my computer? And vice-versa, download music from my computer to the S3?

You'll need the USB Drivers from Samsung which are included in Samsung Kies (Companion software for your phone to sync to PC), I'm sure Greenman will post a link for the USB drivers, Kies is not needed as much.

Install the USB drivers then you just connect phone to the PC using the USB cable. On my PC I have a storage device called GTi9300 appear and then it has Phone (internal storage) and Card (external storage).

Edit: You will have to give the PC a couple of minutes to install and recognise the device.

    1) Is there a way to delete the history, cache memory after going on the internet?

    2) I've been trying to find the memory in my S3 and the only thing I found is in the parameter; in french its called "stockage". I have the total space 12,05 Go and the list of all the photos 124 Mo; audio 220 Mo etc... Where is the 1 or 2 Gb for example? The available space is 6,71 Go...

I'm wondering if I will have enough memory for my trip and the probably 600-800 photos I usually take.

Settings >storage will give you the capacity of the phone. The first section (Internal storage) is the space for apps. The second section (USB Storage) is the internal sd card. This will be your 16Gb. The third section (SD Card) is if you have an external SD card plugged in. The photos will save, by default, to the internal sd card. The amount you can store wil depend on the resolution you set the camera to and the amount of free storage you have.
