The number was sent to you by Orange, and the process of switching off and on allowed the sim to be updated with your correct sim number.
The 'write to sim' process was via Orange and not your android phone.

To get your number sent to the phone, probably not, but to verify the phone and for Orange records, then I guess yes it was.
The main point is getting lost here.
Both Richh and I were pointing out that android phones have not in the past been able to write the number to the sim card.
Are you telling us that has changed with the S3 - check in 'phone' for the facility.
    Just interested.

I'm not telling you anything at all , i was pointing out the process i went through to get my number changed on a New Sim card.
Android is the operating system of a Samsung device , Samsung have their own Boot setup , if that is capable of writing in the way your suggesting or not i do not know.
But you seemed to dismiss my theory without knowing fully yourself.

And mine is just a theory like my theory on the OP having a bad Sim card.

I only dismissed half your theory - the OP reported not having Software update on his phone and I pointed out that removing your sim card would not remove that heading.
Therefore the sim card is not an issue there.
Then RichH pointed out that Androids have not been able to write numbers to the sim card and therefore if the sim card had no number on it then it would show up as such.
    Now explain your theory.
