I've been told it screws up network connections if you don't unlock first. I'm not prepared to risk it as it is apparently a lot of work to get it back online again afterwards, so for that reason alone I WOULD NEVER RECOMMEND trying to flash open FW on a locked phone.

Take a look at this cnet site for 'how to' but use your S3 download.
Was it from sammobile? If so, unzip once
to somewhere you will find it again e.g desktop.
The flashing software is Odin, and link on cnet site.

I have but they have been SonyEricsson. never done a Samsung before. that voodoo unlocker requires the phone to be rooted. there is a seller on eebay that will supply the coad for £11, saves £3 over what 3 want
Rooting the S3 is very easy and will give you more control over your phone.

Did you unzip the file (just once) to where you'll find it, e.g. your desktop?
As you now have to enter the file into Odin - the PDA box.
