Crashing during hard reset

Very hard to ruin Galaxy, but you may have to re flash the firmware via Odin.
Can you get into download mode?
Do you know how to use Odin, and any idea what firmware you are on?

Got into the download mode, but just had the yellow workman sign....nothing happened.

Its not ruined - Just corrupt FW. Google for Odin and download it, then go on youtube and watch the tutorials (this is easier than me trying to explain it). You'll be up and running again in half an hour.

Download it onto where though? I'm on my s3 now, but can't get anywhere with the s1. Am I being incredibly thick?

Do you mean the screen with Warning at the top?
That's the first screen in download and you have to press Volume up top get to greenman screen from where you can carry out an Odin install.

You need to get Odin onto your PC. It's the flashing programme to write FW to your S1. or I can take your phone off your hands for you

Watching the tutorial and he mentions pit & pda files....what are they / where do I find them?

You can forget PIT file.
The PDA is the one you normally end up with with a download from sammobile.com.
