    Please Help

Hello, new to this site. Hope someone can help with a puzzling problem?
I have had a Galaxy S for over a year and so far have been very happy with it until a couple of days ago!
On Sunday evening after approx 10 minutes of inactivity I picked the phone up and it had turned itself off. It wouldn't turn back on to start with but when I did eventually get it back on lots of it's functionality had gone!
I lost all messages. Although I can send and receive messages now.
At the moment I have no 3G, so i can only use the internet to access emails and google play etc using WiFi.
I can't receive incoming calls but I can make calls.
Many Apps were lost but it appears the ones it came with are still there.
The Video player won't play but the video's are there and you can move them frame by frame by pressing the pause button continuously!
The sliding screen lock has gone and the home button doesn't work!
I've probably left one or two things out but the main ones are above.
Any help to get the phone back to how it was would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

Should really start by asking what had you done prior to the crash. Installed new firmware or app perhaps?
As you have lost so much you may as well carry out a factory reset and Clear cache from Recovery.
Press and hold Volume up + Home button + Power button until in Recovery screen.
This will reset the firmware on your phone and should resolve your issues.

Regarding loss of mobile connection, take out your battery and have a coffee before replacing to refresh your network.
For Mobile data, check in Settings > Wireless and network > Mobile networks > Access Point Names that your network settings are there and a green dot next to your mobile package name.

Thanks for getting back so quickly.
The day before the crash I tried to use the GPS but it wouldn't work, which I thought was odd.
I don't install much but I did install SkyGo about a week ago.
If I did do a factory reset would I lose my video's? and what else would I lose? Could I save them somehow?
    Many Thanks

Just checked your procedure for mobile data and there is nothing in Access point names! I did remove the battery for about 20 minutes first.

If you need to re-enter your APN details you can google your network provider then APN Settings....so google 'T-Mobile APN Settings' for instance.

Removing the battery in itself would not result in you losing your APN settings. If these can be reinstalled as Tufftoad suggests or by texting your network for the settings then all will be well apart from your video's.
Rather than carry out a factory reset (which I believe has already happened which is why you've lost so much data) then for your video player try going to Settings > Applications > All and find video player in the list and select.
Now Clear data (this is not your video's but the video player data and will not affect your video's)

    Thanks.
I have tried that with the video player but it's still the same, ie: they won't play they just stay in pause mode.
As for the APN. I followed the instructions given by tufftoad and selected Reset to default which is Orange UK internet. It worked and I now have my 3G back!
I still have no home button, no sliding screen lock and don't know if I can receive calls yet.

Copy any files you want to keep to your SD card and perform a factory reset. The firmware is corrupted somehow so a reset should bring it back to how it was when new. You will have to set up your email and other accounts again. If this fails to restore the phones functions you will have to flash firmware manually via a programme called Odin.

Do you mean copy onto the internal SD card?

looks like RichH is right, it's time for a factory reset.
If Kies works for you, backup any files you want:
    see this link http://www.samsung.com/us/support/Su...7&fm_seq=29185
Your photos and videos should be OK as in a file not touched by the factory reset, but if worried backup or copy them to your sd card and then remove sd card during the reset.
You will lose your mobile data (Access Point Names) again but you now know how to reinstall.

Now carry out the factory reset and Clear cache from Recovery as indicated in message above.

    Ok.
But do you mean an internal or external SD card? And how do I find Kies?
Sorry, I'm a bit of a luddite when it comes to this kind of thing!
    Thanks
