    Kies unable to detect S2

    Hello,

I'm new to Kies and appreciate if you could help resolve my problem. I installed Kies on Win XP and was able to connect Galaxy S2 to my PC. I was able to transfer file and etc. Then, I installed Kies on Win 7. When I connect the S2, it shows the status on the phone, USB Connected (MTP-Connected) and the phone was charging. But Kies shows status "please connect a device". I've tried a few methods:

    1. Uninstall Kies nad reinstall again.
    2. Go to "Settings" > "Wireless and network" > "USB utilities" > "Connect storage to PC".

But unfortunately it does not seems to solve the problem. Is there any steps that i missed out? Any settings to tweak or drivers to install? Sorry for the basic question. I'm a newbie to this whole thing and trying to learn up more bout it. Thank you very much in advance.

    Cheers,

Many people suffer with Kies and Win 7 (XP seems fine). All I can suggest is that you right click the Kies icon and run the programme in XP compatibility mode. If that don't work you're in the "Club" with a few million other frustrated Kies/Win 7 users....

Make sure you have usb debugging unticked as well as Kies doesn't pick it up if it's ticked.

If you are not checking for updates then consider using Kies Air or my favourite is Airdroid to transfer files etc

Personally i don't see the need to use Kies at all, it's an awful piece of software. There's nothing Kies does that other software that actually works can't do.

Initially, from my understanding, I needed Kies to upgrade S2 from Gingerbread to ICS since it is not available OTA. After many attempts to resolve Kies issue on Win7, I decided to throw in the towel and just stick to Gingerbread. Hence, I just decided to run "update software" and surprisingly an update for ICS was available OTA. Now I am in the midst of downloading (file size approx 195MB). Will update on the progress.

RichH - Thanks but that didn't work for me.
hazi1964 - Thanks but usb debugging was unticked and it didn't work.
greenman - Thanks. I was actually considering that but i wasn't comfortable bout doing it via wifi since someone could do packet sniffing.
joey - Thanks. I thought i needed Kies to upgrade ICS. Apparently not. I could do it via OTA.

Good to see you resolved the problem and thanks for letting us know.
Kies can be a problem and that is why many people now update via Odin and a firmware download from sammobile. com

I always used to have this problem.
To resolve it make sure you use the USB cable that came with your galaxy phone.
I'd been using another usb cable but as soon as I used the supplied usb to micro-usb cable it connects to kies first time

I just registered to tell that this is a comment I wouldn't have trusted, but it actually worked. Had issues to make kies work, because I was using an older phone cable, but as soon as I started using the one that came with my Galaxy S2, Kies found it and I am upgrading firmware as I write this.
    Thanks!
