SGS1 Lagging Really Badly - Rooting Help

Not so long ago after my Kies firmware upgrade failed, I had to get my phone fixed by the repair shop who told me that they had installed the latest version of Froyo. PDA:JW4/PHONE:JW4CSC:JW5(CPW) – as ICS is/was not available yet.

With this complete I was unhappy about the live wallpapers supplied as std so I downloaded a few from "play store" which I tried along with Launcher Pro.

It was then my phone started to lag really badly so uninstalled/deleted all the live wallpapers and LauncherPro and installed Zedge.

My phone is still really laggy and it's driving me mad. It gets better for a while after I’ve switched off and on again but I need to do this twice a day otherwise the lag gets too bad, despite installing Android Booster.

I think I need to root my phone but am really unsure what and how to do it.

Looking at a youtube tutorial showing the following, which option should I choose:

    "reboot system now"

“Apply sdcard:update.zip” – I’ve not downloaded any update onto this

“Wipe data/factory reset” – will this wipe my latest version of Froyo?

    “Wipe cache partition”

Is there an idiots guide on how to root somewhere? Or am I barking up the wrong tree?

Can someone please help as I’m just about to throw it at the wall.

    Many thanks
    Ian

Rooting your phone won't get rid of the lag, it will give you admin rights to system files on your phone.

Take it you didn't see the Sticky thread at the top of SGS 1 - Android development - Detailed guide on rooting the Galaxy S

Myself I would go XDA and search for Chainfire's Root page, then search for the root for JW4.

I have been on JW4 before and also found it to be laggy. My advice would be to flash new firmware entirely, the last best firmware for me was JVT/JVU (29 Dec 12)

Latest CPW firmware is this from Samamobile.com:
    I9000XXJW4 2.3.6 2012 April I9000OXAJW5 United Kingdom (Carphone Warehouse)

    Tufftoad's suggestion is:
    I9000XXJVT ## 2.3.4 2011 December I9000OXAJVT United Kingdom (Carphone Warehouse)

Download from here and flash with Odin (like Kies but much better)

I'm beginning to think that the cause of my troubles might be TWLauncher which keeps "stopping working" with a dialogue box requiring me to force it to close. To come to think of it my phone started to slow down after I tried LauncherPro and after a little while decided I didn’t much like it so I uninstalled it.

Could it be this, should I reinstall LauncherPro or is there another I should run.

    Anyone got any ideas?

Tufftoad has suggested that it's your JW4 2.3.6 firmware and suggests you revert to 2.3.4.
I would go by the suggestion.
You need Odin and the download file, and don't have to be rooted to carry this out.
It will delete some data and your contacts so back up via Kies or similar.

Before that you could try deleting data in TW launcher and restarting to see if that clears the problem.
Go to Settings > Applications > All and scroll down to TW Launcher.

Thanks greenman that seems to have done the trick, it's not perfect but it's soooo much better than it was.
