Not much that can go wrong with rooting.
Rooting allows you to get into the hidden part of the file system. Some apps also require root. CF-Root is the most popular method. Which file you use depends on which version of android your phones running.

Rooting is all about getting ultimate control of your phone.
Advantages? A big one is the app Titanium backup. It needs root and with it you can backup, remove and freeze apps that Samsung decided you needed.
Chain fire (CF) root is very good, but does leave a yellow triangle on your start up screen. There are ways to get rid of it with Triangle away ! being the best. But, if you have ICS on your S2 I like this method :
