Question New Firmware update via odin

Apologies if already asked this, I have decided to stay with Odin to do my updates, my question however remains the same - how do I know when there are firmware updates, and how do I know which update code is relevant to my mobile firmware?
Apart from the CSC, modem and PDA codes andother area of confusion is my IMEI number says the core codeing is KOR which and I assumed this was Korea, although when I have looked on the sambile site it is not clear where it is all I know is that is in not uk, this seems to be the reason why Kies does not recognise my mobile, when I put new updates on via Odin I want to be be to rectify this, any advice, direction etc most welcome and again sorry if already asked this but still not clear to me.

The reason Kies doesn't recognise your mobile is because of your CSC being KOR.

Go to the dialer as if you were going to make a call and dial *#06# and this will show your IMEI number. It will be a 15 digit code. Write it down very carefully.
Now dial *#272*Your IMEI# but replace the words "Your IMEI" with the 15 digit code you just wrote down. So for example you would dial something like *#272*213245765434567#

You will get a list of CSC's to choose from. You should select "XEU" and click install. Your phone will probably reboot now and you might need to set the keyboard type and location stuff again.

You should be on XEU if you are in UK (Europe)

Doing the above will carry out a factory reset so make sure you have backed everything up.

Search SamMobile for the latest open European firmware. CSC will be XEU and version 4.0.3, It will say UK/Ireland region. As long as the Kies logo is highlighted Orange, then Kies will accept the FW and update you.

I wondered whtat why some were highlighted and some not now I know.

I have done the *#272*Your IMEI# and the only choice I have is KOR there are no more, how do I get it to give me more choices.
    thanks

Some FW's are multi CSC and some not. If there are no options to choose from you will have to flash FW for correct region as above ^.
As I said before to you though, just changing CSC won't automatically make Kies recognise the phone and update you.....

You would need to flash a new firmware with a multi CSC. As per RichH's post you can download firmware from SamMobile.com.

thicko here again, I will use Odin but want Kies as a back up just incase I mess up (highly probable). How do I find a compatable multi CSC, how do I know i will have the right one. And like RichH siad this may not make the Kies recognise my dirvers etc. So if it does not what will recognise my drivers via Kies, sorry to ask what must seem to you daft questions just wanting to learn and get it right.

RichH also pointed out that each firmware listed on SamMobile has a Kies icon which distinguishes between firmwares which are available on kies (highlighted in colour) and those which are not (greyed out).
