Actually I just read a few forums on ICS, I think I'll stick to 4.03. Do I need to download Odin (or find a solution to getting Kies to work) to do this?

He he!!
Ok first question - will a factory reset help?
I would say yes as it will clean up any problems you may have introduced
You will lose data, such as Contacts saved on phone and any apps you've downloaded.
So a back up is recommended.
I would do it this way:
Turn off your phone put into Recovery (no, that's not lay it on the floor LOL)
Press Volume up + home key + Power at the same time until the screen changes to blue writing.
Use your volume key to choose Factory reset and Home to carry out.
Now do same for Clear cache.
Now restart, and your phone will be back as purchased.

Missed your reply.
You don't have ICS at the moment and would suggest you start by watching this video if you want to install it.
http://reviews.cnet.co.uk/mobile-pho...y-s2-50006766/
Then if you want to continue download the Odin file.
Now go back to sammobile for the ICS file.
You want this one:
I9100XWLP8 4.0.3 2012 April I9100XSALP4 Australia
IMPORTANT: carry out the Factory reset and clear cache before AND after you install ICS.

just noticed your post about connecting to a mac...
on the mac, the 'internet sharing' setting is to allow you to share an internet connection on the mac to another interface
for instance, if you use the ethernet port to connect to the internet, you can share that over the airport interface to other devices
if you don't *have* an internet connection, you can share still share things on the mac itself with other devices
if there's no internet available, the mac will self-assign an ip address, there will be no gateway/default route, or dns, because you'll only get the former if there's a router somewhere, and the latter requires a dns server (normally via your internet connection)
i think you are taking the wrong approach
1) stop fiddling with setting static ip etc., just leave things at default
2) to connect the sgsii<->mac over wireless, the simplest way is to use kies air (which is on your phone by default afaik)
3) if you don't have a wifi router, and it sounds like you don't, choose the hotspot/tethering mode in kies air (if you *do* have a wifi router, choose that option instead and skip steps 4-7, instead set your sgsii to connect to your wifi router's network, which your mac should also be connected to)
4) in the tethering settings choose a network name, security type (choose wpa2-psk), and set a password
5) the sgsii will now set up a network that your mac can connect to
6) click on the airport icon at the top right of the mac screen, turn on airport, you should see it scan and then detect the sgsii network in a few seconds, if not, use the 'join other network' option
7) once the mac sees the network, put in the password
8) now your mac can access your sgsii using a web browser, follow the instructions on the kies air, it'll tell you the ip address etc. to type into the browser's address bar - i've used it ok with current version of safari, firefox works too
the above is from memory, it takes about 10 times longer to describe it than to do it, to test it i'd need to disconnect stuff, but it should be correct/close enough for you to get things working
there must be some missing configuration when you setup the phone
