New S II user for about a month. The past few days, I am receiving a number of junk download apps (battery updates, meet girls etc) on my notification bar every day. Any way of blocking these things ?

I dont think you can block them. I got that because I downloaded a rubbish app. But when I removed the app they didnt come up. Or your could try https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...=search_result that should remove it
Ya, you gotta be careful about what apps you get. I downloaded a legit app off the Play Store for my Nexus, and next thing I'm getting "update" notices for my battery app which brought me to some website.
Yep, it's one or more apps you installed pushing notifications to your phone.
Try installing Addons Detector, which can tell you the specifics of each app you have installed.
I'd suggest looking at the Push Notifications first. If you find an app with that and can live without it, uninstall it.
I could be wrong, I usually am. (Because it's only a phone)

Thanks for the hints folks. I think that I have tracked the culprit down to 'Star Chart Free' - deleted same and no more junk (so far)
I was told this morning that there was an Android AP update. When I let it update, I lost control of the Galaxy and cannot even get my keyboard back!...suggestions on how I can "uninstall" this monster?
Might have to reinstall a backup of your phone.
Boot to recovery mode and factory reset.
