If you upgrade via Kies I think it's No Wipe - meaning your shouldn't lose anything.
HOWEVER - if you don't do a factory Reset and wipe cache then you are likely to have problems with your ICS update, and that will lose you data, apps ,and contacts (saved on phone)

I have updated from 2.3.4 to 4.0.3 and it was a mistake, I have so much trouble with the phone , most of the times it doesn't play my message notifications and when browsing the internet sometimes it doesn't tick on the links maybe after 20 to 40 touches it goes into the link, I hope that there will be a newer update soon to rectify this problems I have.

You need to do a factory reset. I and millions of others have no such problems with ICS...
