Best way to reload phone going from GB to ICS

    Hello,

    Thanks for the feedback greenman.

For ATT phones turns out that you need to do this:
*With phone powered off hold the phone horizontally and with both thumbs hold the volume up AND down buttons, keep holding these while pressing and holding on the the power button until the Andriod logo shows up. Then let go and the Andriod recovery screen shows up. Follow the procedure to wipe the data then the cache and reboot the phone.

*Now as far as reloading data/settings going from GB to ICS, here's what worked for me:
***KIES restore sucks, didn't work no matter what i did. Even after doing a wipe...
***Having setup google sync to backup all my stuff prior to installing the OS saved the day.
***When the phone boots the first time from a wipe or firmware update, simply setup youre google account first. This will restore most things way more then KIES restore did.

***Now all is needed is to reconfigure the home screen and redo some app settings.

For me this is more then enough, I'm sure there are other ways. Possibly if I use a combination of google sync and then use KIES to restore only certain things, may further bring a phone back to normal but don't have time to play.

    Hope this helps someone,
    Regards, ID.

PS. Unless you got 4G and unlimited data plan, make sure you also setup wifi connection when prompted in the begining while setting up the google account. As once the phone is done with the initial setup you will get a bunch of installation coming in.

Thank you. Not familiar with the ATT variant but some useful points.
One thing we can agree on is that Kies is useless, although useful if you want to update your phone, but even that is better done with Odin.

You welcome, although I said KIES sucks. I would still do a back either using KIES or other utility before doing any firmware update, just in case.

There are apps and software to do all that KIES is supposed to do.
BTW I use XP with Kies and have no problem (typical!!).
What are you using as there may be some tips on here for your PC/MacOS to try and get Kies working.

Good point, I'll check it out thanks. W7-64b, could very well be a windows issue nothing surprizes me. I did read that it may not be a good thing to do a complete back/restore, but chose the key things especially jumping a full OS upgrade. I just don't have the patience anymore...I'm up and running now which is good, will clean the home screen a little at time.

I did the ICS upgrade when it first came out. I wanted clean up the phone since I was spending the day with this upgrade and kies upgrading as well. So I clean out all my music, took everything off of the phone that showed up in the music part. Now my phone doesnt 'ding' when I recieve text messages, FB messages, etc...I checked the volume on all the settings ( general phone, messaging, as well as in messaging), I have put it on silent, then all up and I am just lost on what to do to fix this problem.

Any words of wisedom, or anyone run into this problem and fixed it? Thank you for the help.

I presume you mean the settings to unlock the phone.

I'm new to MS Exchange and am in the process of connecting to it on my SIII. Is it compulsory to have these security settings or is there a way to connect and keep just a swipe to unlock the phone?

You've removed the ringtone files, so factory reset, or re flash your firmware.

Hi, I recently upgraded from gingerbread (Darky's rom) -> ICS. Everything appears to work fine except voice calls. When I make a call, I get connected OK but neither me or the call recipient can hear each other (there is no sound at all) .... occasionally I just hear garbled gobbledegook on myside. Has anybody else experienced this specific issue? I have tried clearing my cache/factory reset/reinstalling from zip but this hasn't helped.

FYI, I am now running on kernel "3.1.10@skorpion Devil_15.1_LED2 #1" and build number "IMM30B".

    Thanks in advance!
