I have an unlocked GS2 (so not purchased through a mobile company) operating on a Vodafone UK SIM-only monthly contract. I received the OTA upgrade to ICS over this weekend and I must admit not only was I disappointed but have had some problems too...
Firstly I was not expecting to lose all of my 7 launcher desktops - it was a pain trying to remember what widgets I had set up and what Apps on which desktop. Then I also lost all of my Bluetooth pairings and I'm having to set up all of those again too.
Secondly in several cases the look and feel is not to my taste, for example the graphical pattern unlock screen looks naff and many of the settings menus are now text-only having lost their icons.
Finally in the 48 hours since the upgrade there have been 3 occasions where I have been using the phone with more than 80% battery remaining then I've clicked to the home screen and switched off the display then 20 mins later the phone is completely dead. Even plugging in the charger had no effect. I had to leave the charger plugged in for around 10 mins then hold down the power button for 10 secs and then it would indicate dead battery and charging. I used to use JuiceDefender to extend the battery life so that I didn't need to charge it every night, but I stopped using it because although it worked it didn't quite extend it enough for me to only charge it every other night. However I've started using it again now in case it helps with this problem.
I also have an ASUS Transformer Prime tablet running ICS and I have been very impressed with that - none of these issues - so I can only conclude that it's not a very well tested implementation of ICS on the GS2. Does anyone know if there is an easy way to put the GS2 back to Honeycomb and not bother with ICS? Or alternatively do you think there will be updates soon that resolve these glitches?
P.S. I did not experience the loss of any Apps (as reported above). Yes they disappeared off the desktops but they were still there in the Apps list and could easily be added back again. Having built some Android Apps for the Market I would have expected that only Apps that for some reason are incompatible with ICS would disappear and they should be few and far between.
Kind Regards
Steve
I use Kies v2.3 to sync Outlook 2010 and Samsung Galaxy SII GT-I9100.
Since upgrading to ICS all new one-off events I create either in Outlook or on the Samsung only appear with a start time on the Samsung after syncing. Old and newly created recurring events are fine and show a start and end time.
Since the upgrade wifi won't switch on unless i restart my phone. Has no problems before.
I've not tried the radio - I'll give it a go.
Another thing I forgot about: SMS messages - now every time I read one it opens the keyboard and pushes most of a long message off the screen. Previous it only opened the keyboard when I tapped on the reply message text area - which is how Android is supposed to work - no keyboard until you indicate that you want to type something by tapping on an entry field. So I consider that to be a bug.
I didn't wipe the phone because it was an automatic Over The Air update. I've had a great number of those since buying the phone so I admit to assuming that it was at Honeycomb before going to ICS - why would it skip a version? That only makes upgrades trickier?
I can't say for sure but I think honeycomb was for tablets only and ics is to merge to a common version for all devices.
A minor niggle but I use Folder Organizer to sort out my apps. I've noticed a definite delay in the folders opening since switching to ICS.
