I have followed this exchange with interest but my problem is that Kies says my phone, a galaxy s2 unlocked, cannot be upgraded via Kies, doubt if I could follow the Odin instructions, maybe I just have to use my phone without the upgrade to Ics.

Hi, If you bought a network phone and then had it unlocked you are going to have to do a manual install of any firmware.
Suggest you start by looking at the video, as it really isn't that difficult.
First time is a bit daunting, but providing you get your phone recognised by your computer it's pretty easy.

PS If you are happy with your phone on gingerbread then stay with it.
ICS doesn't take such a big leap, and many are regretting their installation of ICS.
