Updating From Gingerbread 2.3.4 to ICS What Is the Order Of Things To Do before?

Hi, I mean by before, I have noted other posts refer to factory reset, cache clearing, and a couple of other bits/bobs, what is the best route from scratch? I have done a small list below, if you can put it into do first, 2nd, 3rd etc and add any other actions I may have missed off? I want this to be as near a perfect upgrade as possible... It may help others as well having read some "after upgrade issues"

    Ok,

    Fully charge battery
Factory reset + How to get to (the button route)
Cache Clearing + How to get to (the button route)
Back up and what needs backing up, and what not to back up
Any other missed off procedures before updating

THANKS IN ADVANCE TO YOU SGS2 EXPERTS OUT THERE.....

There's plenty of information out there, but the first thing to decide is whether you carry out a Kies or Odin upgrade.
    1. Drivers
Connect to Kies and ensure drivers are installed or better still my advice is to install drivers from here rather than via Kies:
Latest version of Kies is v2.3.0.12035_16_4 with driver v1.5.4.0 inside.

    http://www.lastnite.de/SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_1.5.4.0.exe

    ODIN INSTALL:
Install via Odin information and video here: http://reviews.cnet.co.uk/mobile-pho...y-s2-50006766/
    1. Fully charge battery or over 50%
    2. Select USB debugging
    3. Backup your data and contacts (External sd card will be untouched as will pictures in gallery
    4. Factory reset + How to get to (the button route)
5.Cache Clearing + How to get to (the button route)

Hi, I was hoping to find this info on here, but searched updating to ICS, Cache Clearing, but could find nothing relevant,
I know Kies works ok as I have just backed up, What/where is USB debugging??? What about Network settings? I back them up but do I restore them after update?? How to get to Cache Clearing? Where is factory reset?
    Cheers;

    Hi, Bit Worried!!!!

Just gone to the link above:
    http://reviews.cnet.co.uk/mobile-pho...y-s2-50006766/

    And It says, I Quote:

Installing this update will invalidate your manufacturer warranty, and CNET UK, its employees, their immediate families and even their pets take absolutely no responsibility whatsoever for any damage you may inflict on your phone as a result of following this guide.

If thats the case, I wont do it, why do Samsung release something for a product, knowing if it goes wrong, they are exempt???
    Or am I missing something??

OK so you're using Kies to get ICS.
You can forget USB debugging as that is for an Odin update not for Kies.
With Kies you can just connect and install, as I think the flashed firmware is 'no wipe'
However, if you get problems then backup and factory reset and clear cache.

Your network should then send your settings, but if not visit their website to obtain APN.
Now in ICS go to Settings > Wireless and network (More....) > Mobile networks > Access Point Names
If your network is not there with a green dot, then either:
    1. choose whatever APN is there.
Go through the list to edit to your networks settings
    Press menu and save.
    2. If no APN Press Menu and Reset to default (if a network download) or New APN - now put in APN settings as in (1)

If you want to cary out a factory reset you can do it by:
    1. going into your phone settings (think it's under Privacy in GB but can't remember)
    2. Put phone into Recovery by pressing and holding :
Volume UP + Menu + Power button until recovery screen appears (takes about a minute)
You will then have a menu to choose from including Factory reset and clear cache.
Choose using volume up/down and press Menu to action

If you update with official samsung firmware you cannot invalidate your warranty.
The video is about updating via Odin, you are updating via Kies, so no problem.

Ok, I went to that link as suggested, to be honest the whole damn thing looks scary!
I cannot find "How to clear Cache" Prior to updating?? (How to get there)
I cannot find "How to factory reset" Prior to updating?? (How to get there)
I cannot find "Set to Debugging" Prior to updating?? (What on earth is debugging and How to get there)

I find some of the links I went to abit to tecno for me, I am ok with Word, basic excel, and stuff, the guides seem to be for a higher level end user than me....

No, think my reply was written before your reply got up!!

This section below in red, is it before loading ICS or After?

Your network should then send your settings, but if not visit their website to obtain APN.
Now in ICS go to Settings > Wireless and network (More....) > Mobile networks > Access Point Names
If your network is not there with a green dot, then either:

    Press menu and save.
    2. If no APN Press Menu and Reset to default (if a network download) or New APN - now put in APN settings as in (1)

ALSO;I have factory reset via recovery mode screen, I have cleaned cache via same screen, going to plug into kies now, do I have phone powered up, or off?
    Cheers

    OK in your order now:
Restart phone, but don't put in any settings.
    1. Start Kies and connect phone (switched ON) via USB
    2. If you haven't connected before then your PC will recognise and want to download drivers.
Let it go through the process fully.
Drivers are so important that they have to be installed and working properly.
    3. Allow Kies to recognise the phone.
    4. I, and when it does, then carry out any updates.
it can take a while, but if more than 15 minutes you may have a problem.
    5. Once completed your phone will reboot.
    6. Let it go through media scanning.
    7. you will effectively have a new phone and have to reinstall your Google settings etc, but ICS does put you onto WiFi (you will need password) unlike Gingerbread.
    8. If you installed a network ROM I would expect the phone settings to be included.
