Missing contacts between Gmail and SGS2 ?!

My boyfriend just got the Samsung Galaxy S2. He is coming from an iphone4. He managed to get all of his contacts from his iPhone onto his PC, gmail recognises all 1715 contacts! He synced his Samsung with gmail yet his phone only picked up 1406 contacts. Where are the other 300? They are contacts that he uses everyday like mine, and friends. But they have disappeared between gmail and the phone. Any ideas?

    Blimey 1715 contacts???
How did he carry out the sync? OTA or via USB?
Presumably they are still on his PC.
    Has he tried syncing again?

Business contacts mainly. He came from iPhone so sent/moved contacts to the PC and then sent/moved them to gmail. We can see all the contacts on the PC infront of us, but his phone seems to only want to pick up 1406 of them :-/

Don't know if this is a problem with the stock Contacts app.
May be worth trying another from the Market.
I use Go contacts as it also shows the contact number next to their name - something the stock Contact app doesn't do.
But again, I couldn't say if it would accept so many contacts - haven't got that many

Don't know if this link may help:

Ok... now there is a little symbol on the notification bar at the top that looks like a little sim with an exclaimation mark... iv taken it out and gave it a little wipe on my top to get any dust off but it's brand new today. Like 8hours old. Ugh this is getting annoying.
I have the Samsung galaxy S, mine was no problems. Meh!

Have you tried to save the contacts to the sim card?
Sounds as if the sim has been corrupted in some way.

The phone is unlocked or locked to your sim network isn't it?
Check whether your Galaxy S2 is unlocked by selecting 'phone' and dial in the following code: *#7465625# (View Phone Lock Status). If network lock says 'OFF', then it's unlocked.
