    Liar, you mean a 2

You would need a wireless router in order to connect to the home broadband.

You can get a decent-enough wireless N router for 20 quid if needed, or spend upto £120 for a bells 'n' whistles one.
I could be wrong, I usually am. (Because it's only a phone)

Sorry, yes it is a SGS2. Did not lie ... just a mistake. My issue is relating to travel when some accommodations do not have wireless to rooms. Sounds like it is not possible. Thanks for your help.

For Internet on your phone all you need is a mobile data plan. If you want Internet on a laptop you can tether to your s2.
Go into settings > Wireless & network > Tethering and mobile hot spot.

Thanks for all the responses. I actually wanted to avoid carrying a laptop with me or using expensive data plans.. one of the reasons for purchasing a Smartphone ... I guess the solution may be to carry a small wireless router. In terms of connection is that practical?

I'm unsure exactly what you are trying to achieve.
Are you thinking that you can somehow plug your phone into a phone socket to obtain an Internet connection? If so, you can't.
When travelling your options are to use mobile data or wifi. Many hotels, bars and restaurants offer wifi, and usually for free.
If I've got this wrong, perhaps you can put me straight.

Just been on holiday and there were loads of Wi-Fi hotspots. Suppose it depends where you are going!

Sorry, I have not explained things fully. I want to be able to use my SGS3 in a situation where only a cable modem is available. I'm aware that wi-fi hotspots are readily available but not always in accommodation rooms where often only a cable modem is available and intended for a laptop. My query is simply .. if I took my own Wireless Router and connected it to the internet cable (not the phone line) would that work. Hope I've explained it now. Thanks a lot.
