No FOTA updating to ICS!

I've been told by Samsung technical support that updating from Gingerbread 2.3.X to ICS won't be available over the air because it's such a large file and the risk of updating OTA is too high. So [according to Samsung technical support] the only way to update to ICS (other than via ODIN) will be via Kies.

Is this correct advice from Samsung?

I have a galaxy s2 with the following specs:
Android version 2.3.3
Baseband version I9100XXKDH
Kernel version2.6.35.7-I9100XWKDD-CL161513 foot@DELL103#2
Build number Gingerbread.XWKDD
Have not a cluewhat it all means but I was doing a syncro on kies when I noticed a sign which indicated my phone was not able to be upgraded via kies.If it cannot be upgraded over the air either, where does it leave me? Will I have to use Odin?
My phone is unlocked if this makes a difference.

My S2 won't connect to Kies either so Samsung TS suggested sending my S2 away for repair(??) or if I was that keen on getting ICS go to one of their repair centres and get them to put ICS on my phone.

It does rather question why there is an FOTA facility on the S2 if you cannot use it to update to ICS!

The FOTA was put in place before ICS was going to be released and is also available on the SGS1. It's mainly used for minor updates or big updates pre ICS.

I got ICS OTA a couple of weeks ago. I read somewhere that Samsung were only enabling this on a country by country basis, no idea if it is true but I got it here in Finland.

So if you want to update to ICS but Kies won't allow your phone to connect to it, how do you update?

A Spanish user has been given a Vodafone OTA update to ICS, so may be up to the network.
As far as updating without OTA you have two options.
1. Connect to Kies
2. Download file and connect to Odin

Odin is much better than Kies at flashing the update file, but a slightly different procedure.

But don't you invalidate the phone's warranty if you use Odin?

If you install a stock Samsung ROM then no, you do not invalidate the Warranty if using Odin.
If you go on to root or use a modified ROM then, yes, but even that is reversible.
