when a email arrives at the phone a femail voice announces the fact! I do not want this feature active - how do I disable it please??

The phone could be in driving mode, I think the setting may be under Accessibility in the settings menu.

Hi, the setting is in accessibility, its the "Talkback" feature, just untick it..

Driving mode is in>menu>settings>voice input and output>text-to-speech settings>driving mode, take the tick out.

Not just email announcements. I have the SVOX Victoria voice sounding a bit like Moira Stewart telling me who's calling so I can pick up the calls I want without looking at the phone.

Works with text messages as well.

Very handy.
