Several problems... Apps won't open, calls don't work, clock is lagging???

I've got the galaxy s, with firmware version 2.2.1.

Last night, I tried to open one of my apps and it came up with that it had stopped working unexpectedly and to force close. So I forced closed it, tried to open it again and it did it again. Tried to open all the other apps I've downloaded and none of them will open properly; they all crash. Even when I haven't tried to open an app, the phone will tell me it's stopped working and to force close. The ones that were originally on the phone seem to still work though.
Also, when trying to ring someone, I click on the number in their contact and the phone doesn't do anything; it won't ring anyone. I've tried inputting the number myself and it still won't come up with the screen that appears during a call.
The clock on the status bar seems to be lagging behind the time that shows on the lock screen.
Just overall the phone seems to be lagging.
I have recently cracked the screen slightly, but I don't think that would do anything to the actual working of the phone.

Can anyone help? Tell me what's wrong, how to fix it?

What region and network are you on as 2.2.1 is very old firmware. You should be on gingerbread by now (2.3.x). Do you have kies installed on your comouter? If you connect the phone to kies, it should tell you the latest firmware for your device.

Froyo (2.2.x) was a very laggy firmware amd the updates to gingerbread cured most, if not all problems and it ran much faster and smoother.

Have a look in the development section for the galaxy s on these forums, I'm sure there will be information on where to get kies if you don't already have it and also a guide on how to do the update.

    Hi.

I'm in the UK, didn't realise just how old the firmware on my phone is. I've just downloaded Kies so I'll see if I can update it.

    Thanks.

Will do. It's updating the firmware at the moment, so I'll let you know if it fixes the problems.

    Thanks.

Right, I updated the firmware, this solved the clock lagging problem. I've uninstalled Samsung Push Service and AdService as both came up regularly as not responding and both seemed unecessary. However, some other apps still won't open (but I'm uninstalling/reinstalling to try and solve this). Main problem is that when I try and make calls, the phone laggs massively and takes a good minute or so to actually change the screen and start the call once I've either inputted the number or clicked the number in my contacts. So it's seems like the update hasn't fixed a lot :/ Any suggestions to fix this?

You may need to do a wipe data/factory reset. Pain in the wotsit but could solve the problems.

Okay, was hoping I wouldn't need to do that but I might give it a try. I've reinstalled all the apps, the whole 'not responding' problem seems to have stopped, it's just the calls that're an issue now.
I used Kies to back up my contacts, music, photos etc before I updated the firmware. When I factory reset, will they be the only things that I'll be able to restore back onto the phone? I'd rather not loose all my texts and things :/

I think you will lose the texts. I never back anything up except photos and music so can't help on that I'm afraid.
