Check the phones APN settings. Menu, settings, wireless and networks, access point names. You can phone orange to get the correct settings or do a Google search for them.

You need the correct settings for the network sim you are trying to use. I had that too.

All networks should be able to give you the APN settings.

a quick google search revealed the following for pay monthly APN settings.

    Mobile Web

    Name: O2 Mobile Web
    APN: mobile.o2.co.uk
    UserName: web
    Password: web
    MCC: 234
    MNC: 10
    APN Type: default

    And Post Pay,

    Name: O2 Post Pay
    APN: wap.o2.co.uk
    UserName: o2wap
    Password: password
    MMSC: http://mmsc.mms.o2.co.uk:8002
    MMS Proxy: 193.113.200.195
    MMS Port: 8080
    MCC: 234
    MNC: 10
    APN Type: mms

If your on pay as you go, the settings will be different.

I am with giffgaff on the O2 network, and constantly get questions on this as giffgaffers have to install their own APN settings.

First of all make sure you are in an area to receive an O2 data signal.
    Look here: http://www.o2.co.uk/coveragechecker
    If that's OK
Make sure there is no maintenance work in your area: http://status.o2.co.uk/
    If all that is good:
Go to Setings >Wireless and network > Mobile network > and make sure 'use packet data' is ticked
If OK carry on to Access Point Names
Make sure that the O2 payment type you are on is there and green dot next to it e.g. PAYG, Pay monthly.
If not there you have 2 options.
    1. Obtain settings from O2
    2. Enter settings manually
Both options can be found here:http://mobileguide.o2.co.uk/devices/...ceId=667&tab=8

When you pull the notification bar down, is it showing O2? Have you tried a sim from another network in the phone, just to see if you can make and receive calls?
