    Update.

got latest version of Kies, at least it reads my phone now!! so first thing - "Your device does not support software upgrading via Kies"... wtf????
anyway went to contacts and it listed the phone contacts, so far so good, went to the SIM card tab, it thought about it and than abandoned the process.
now i just have a screen saying load contacts from GT-I9100 and underneath that an Import Contacts button that does not do anything....
so is it simply a case of a corrupt SIM?? but if so why did it do the same with a new foreign SIM?? software problem maybe....
guess i better buy a usb SIM reader

Now Kies wont even recognise phone.. my God in heaven Kies must be the worlds shittiest piece of software!!

think SIM is broken or SIM part of OS. Voicemail number is stored direct on SIM, can put and save number in settings, but if i try to access voicemail - no number stored on SIM card!!
go back to voicemail settings, no number listed.

anyonw know how i can fix this?

I am thinking a clean install of official ICS UK, when it comes out in a few days. Now i can odin install the software, but how do i do a totally clean install, wiping everything clean on the phone?
Have used the CWS wipe options etc, but of course back ups are left and it is not clean install, all music is there, photos and loads of other stuff.
Can i wipe my phone totally ready for a install of official ICS UK?

If your simcard is pretty old then it's possible some of the conenctions could be worn, I think the only fix for this is to contact your network provider and ask for a new one.

As for a wipe clean I usually just factory reset and also format internal SD card. The option to format USB storage is Menu > Settings > SD Card & Phone Storage > Format USB Storage.

Remember you can wipe the Dalvik Cache and another Cache option from the Recovery Menu.

maybe i will order a new SIM from Orange...
Cant even store voicemail number now as that goes direct to the SIM!!!
also if ICS UK is soon official, would like a nice clean phone seeing as i have been playing with various ICS leaks over the last few months.
by the way, what exactly is the dalvik cache? dalvik... weird word.

I've just been playing around with my contacts as they were in such a mess, with multiple entries, and hope this helps:

The problem for me started in System > Accounts and sync in that the accounts in there were all syncing the contacts.
So, first job was to decide WHICH account I wanted to sync with.
In my case I decided to just have the phone contacts, so went into each of accounts and made sure 'Sync contacts' was unticked.
(If your contacts come from a linked account e.g. hotmail, then save your Contact list first by going to Contacts > Menu > Import/Export > export to USB storage)

Next job was to go to Contacts on phone and select each person, and under connections, remove any links.

Now to Contacts > Menu and Import/Export and selected to 'Export to SIM card'

Back to Contacts > Menu > Contacts to display and selecting 'SIM' or 'Phone' showed the numbers.
