Tearing my hair out with ICS

Hey guys i really need some help here.

Ive been going backwards and forwards trying to figure out how to root my SGS and upgrade the rom from the official gingerbread release from samsung to the latest ICS ROM.

Ive been pointed towards various links for the infamous 'update.zip' to prepare for rooting and CWM but all links are dead. I even downloaded something called heimdall and installed that with some degrees of success but i dont know where to go from there.

Ive downloaded a copy of ICS by the name of 'ICSSGS 4.0.3 MR1 RC4.2 GT-I9000' which im waiting to put on but without rooting i'm stuck and its beginning to annoy me.

So i really need help with the location of update.zip and a seriously dumbed down how-to guide on rooting, flashing and upgrading my phone & rom to ICS.

    Please please please help me!

    Bri.

I'm running this on my galaxy S, it's stable and suitable for daily use. It's very easy to install.. there are instructions for flashing from stock samsung Rom.

All done, looks pretty good so far, had a slight issue after reflashing with a message saying there was an encryption problem (after the angry unicorn screen)

Also, the only app-related problem ive found is that the NatWest Banking app wont install as it says "your device isnt compatible with this item" It was expected really as it isnt an official ICS release.

    Thanks,

    bri.

The banking apps won't work because of the root, they consider it a '' security risk'', glad you're all sorted. I'd packed my S away in preference to my S2 but since I flashed this Rom my 2 hasn't seen the light of day.
