Mine does it a couple of times a month........................It was doing it about eight or nine times a day, I updated to latest firmware and then did a factory reset. Cured it enough to not have any affect on me. It only turns off then on again when in standbye. It's never done it while being used.

Mine shuts down frequently for no apparent reason. Several times a day. It is very annoying as I keep missing calls! For a quite expensive phone I'd expect better.

Mine also did this could be 4 times in a day and then fine for a week. Since the ICS upgrade a couple of weeks ago it has been fine though

You need to look at clearing out what is using phone memory on your phone - not any external sd card.
These phones are very good but you have to have a clear-out every so often.
Cached game files, video's and pictures take up a lot of memory and can lead to crashes.

To be honest, you need to factory reset your phone and clear cache and it will be fine.

My S2 keeps crashing then coming back on in a few minutes claiming it has 'critically low battery', how can i go about stopping this without resetting the phone?

My phone have been doing this like 4-5 times in a day and it is extremely annoying, I have also factory reset the phone like 4 times in a week and still no change. What I have also realized is that the apps automatically download again as soon as I turn the phone back on, so annoying.

First of all, have you ever updated the phone's software either using Samsung Kies or the OTA (Over The Air) function on your phone?

As for the Google Play problem of auto loading apps on your phone I had something similar, here's a thread I posted - Google Play - Auto Restore apps
The option which should stop the auto install of apps is: Menu > Settings > Backup & Restore > Untick 'Automatic Restore'

Yes I have updated the software recently and I think that probably caused the phone to do like this I don't know

I'm also taking for granted that the update you got was from Android 2 to Android 4. Because the update was a big step for your phone it has been recommended to all people that a factory reset is carried out.
You've carried out a factory reset already so something else must be causing the phone to slow down.

Just trying to narrow a few things down here.
How many apps have you installed on the phone?
How did you install the software upgrade? Samsung Kies, OTA or Odin?
Could you please dial *#1234# and report back what appears.
