Pretty much anything. I believe if you copy across using Kies it will convert them into a format it can use. If not, install a 3rd party app like MX Player.

Have you tried copying them with Kies? It asks if you want to convert as you copy.

when i try to connect through Kies, it asks me to instal Java application as file upload limit is 100 mb and unfortunately i am trying to upload through my office laptop which doesnt allow me to instal anything including java applet. Can i convert using an app and then copy to my samsung galaxy note? Thanks very much

If the original file is in mp4 format then you dont need to convert it so select the option to just copy rather than convert. I have blu-ray rip files which download in mp4 format meaning converting isn't necessary.
