How to completely void your warranty. No way would I do that to an expensive phone. I would sooner go buy a dedicated night vision camera.

But with rooting you can restore just back to warranty status, you can't if you take the phone apart.

I can't help I'd only do hardware hacking if I knew I could pull it off or don't require the device any more (PC not Included)

Hazi1964, for some, warranty isn't an issue. Just like using modified firmware to improve or add extra features to your phone, hardware hacking is the same.

If only I could have a camera on my phone. My signal is crap, now I can't use the internet, WiFi would be good. All this information and nowhere to save it, if only I could get more space

I was trying to do the same for a scientific project of mine, and unfortunately my first attempt failed too.

the photo of my failed result is shown here
    https://picasaweb.google.com/1172335...29798493083202

    The phone I used was a Nexus S (Galaxy S). It has a 5M camera and a 2M front-facing camera.

After taking the camera module out of the main board, I first removed the lens on the top by twisting it CCW. You can see the IR filter glass underneath. Then I tried removing the black plastic lens housing using a plier and tearing it slightly, like I did for a webcam camera module. Unfortunately, the housing without the lens filling became quite soft, and got deformed under the force of the plier. I decided to break the IR filter glass by carefully pressing it down. I took the broken glass pieces out of housing and blow it with air. The CMOS looks intact after the operation. After assemble everything together, I launched the Camera App, it took a while (10 s) to start, and the camera view was black. I put my fingers on top of the camera module, I feel it is a bit hot. It is not working anymore. If I switch camera to the front one, I can still see images.

Since it was broken, I decided to try the same for the front camera, but with more caution. This time, I did not use the plier at all, and only removed the lens and crush the IR glass. After cleaning, I put it back to the phone. This time, camera completely stopped working, either front or back. The front camera became burning hot when turned on.

I have to get another phone or a broken one to try this again. I don't know fully understand why the front camera failed too, since I was very careful not to scratch the CMOS. I doubt the cavity housing the CMOS requires vacuum. I also need to get some tools to do a better job for my next try.

If any of you have succeeded in doing this, please let me know. Also, anyone know where to buy these modules other than getting a broken phone from ebay?
