mmmm interesting reading. my hubby got his new sgs a few weeks ago and had gone through 230mb of his 500mb allowance (on orange) in just over a week but isnt using it anywhere near as much as i do. mines on virgin and i barely go through 150mb of my 1gb a month and i use 3g alot!

Do u think all the branded orange apps could be the culprit???

mines on virgin but hasnt come loaded with all the rubbish that orange have put on it..... just a thought

Sounds like the phone is constantly updating e-mail,message , facebook etc...mine did that til i switched off the ' background sync' option...check all the auto-sync settings.
Its a handy feature but you really need an add-on allowance of at least 1gb / month for this feature alone.

    hi genman

that was the first thing i turned off when i realised how much data he was using. In settings, accounts and sync its all turned off, so it cant be that. dont know what else could be using it, apart from the orange apps. Anyone else on orange using alot of data?

I remember someone saying that orange preloaded a lot of their own (buggy) software? If they are being so nice about giving out free mbs and being so helpful I'd guess that they are aware of the issue and probably the cause of it. Might want to de-brand the phone...

Or you could just use a program like Titian Backup to remove them

    Hi doomed
How do I get the titian backup? Is it an app from the market or is it a program off the internet?

Titanium backup - from the Market, you'll have to root your phone to use it. Oops, sorry, Doomed

With the "Background data" and "Auto-sync" options disabled, the phone continued wasting my data. I finally isolated the problem to two culprits: the email client, which will use data regardless of whether I allow it to, and the snsService, although I do not have any social networks configured on the phone (I use a web browser for access).

So killed those two and I'm fine. Te only problem is that I really need email syncing ... (I have an unlocked, non-branded stock SGS)

I installed the SMODA widget, works fine, turns all data usage off You might try it, does its job in one click.

The stock email client - if you check under its own account settings options, you can set its frequency to whatever you want - from never to a maximum of 1 hour.
I have it set to never, but any time you open the app it will synch then - so no missed emails.
    Homer
