    Exclamation my unlocked galaxy s2

i bought my phone from amazon.de and it was sold unlocked. also, it was from amazon and not a third party using amazon as an outlet.

    my question is this:

if my handset is unlocked, how do i receive an update for the OS. does it rely on the SIM card i put in? ie, if i put a Tmobile (germany, im living in germany at the moment) SIM in it, should i get the Tmobile update? (2.3.5 available to Tmobile in Germany since November 2011 - http://devsrom4android.blogspot.com/...dates-via.html)

so far i have not been able to get any update, just a message in Kies saying that the phone is up to date and from settings>about>update the same thing.

not overly fussed as the phone is gorgeous and i am loving it but i have that faint gut feeling that they are going to pull an i8910 on me again. i dont want to miss an update because i bought an unlocked phone, come on samsung, wheres your own software version?!

i should mention, i am not keen on the idea of rooting my phone

    thanks all =)

The phone will update relative to the CSC it is set to. An unlocked / unbranded phone is not network specific.....

thats what i figured. so presumably the CSC is the generic european one if it is an unlocked phone, yes? so can anyone tell me if the update is/should be available?

i figure this, even if the worst should happen and i dont get it, i will wait until the generic ICS update comes online then root and flash. but i would prefer to avoid rooting for now.

You need to dial *#1234# and then post here what you get. People will be able to help you more with that information.

The latest open european firmware is 2.3.4 AFAIK. Networks have delivered further upgrades as far as 2.3.6 but these are network specific and not open firmwares. You can check the latest releases on SamMobile.com

RichH, that pretty answers my question, cheers.

when i go back to australia i will most likely root and change the CSC.

if i root, change CSC and then un-root the phone will the CSC change remain the same? my theory is that i change it to the generic australian (if there is one) CSC or one of the provider's ones.

the next question i have is this: if i change the CSC to Optus (provider) and use a vodafone sim card, will that cause problems?

also, for the version you listed on sammobile, the kies logo is greyed out. does this mean that it is only available for direct flashing?

Yes, if the keis logo is greyed out it is not available via keis and must be flashed manually. 2.3.6 is pretty good though so if you are comfortable with DIY then go for it.... Rooting will not have any effect on CSC or vice versa. It allows you access to the "Root" menu of the phone, that's all. You can use any provider firmware version (if you really want to ???) but you would have to overwirite the APN settings (if the firmware allowed you to) to work with the Voda SIM. Better off sticking with open firmware, unlocked and rooted then you have the freedom to play to your hearts content :-)

so i think that means that it is not a euro phone but maybe a german phone.... any ideas?
as i said, i would rather avoid flashing myself because these things always go wrong for me :P whereas if kies does it then if it messes up i can blame thier software on the warranty claim.

short of that, i just really dont want to have to tinker too much at this stage. once i am more comfortable with the phone i will have a try at it but for now i just want to keep things a bit factory.
