Where do I put files in Heimdall

Hi all, sorry if this has already been answered but all the posts I've read seem to have files that, annoyingly for me, correspond with their partitions.

Odin as bricked my phone twice, it just won't work, even after all the helpful suggestions I received from the members on this forum, (thanks.) So now I want to try hiemdall as I am told it is much more reliable.

    I have downloaded Heimdall 1.3.1 for windows 7 32bit.

I want to flash the litening rom but when I extract the tar the files that I get are:

    Factory fs, disc image file
    Modem.bin, BIN file
zimage, file (type just says file)

When I try to put factoryfs in that partition heimdall comes up with a message that it expects a rts file.? Modem is pretty straight forward, but what kind of file is the zimage is it an actual zimage file to go into that partition or does it go somewhere else? I would really appreciate your help as this has me stumped.

    Thanks.

I've never used Heimdall myself. Doomed is the man you need to speak to. I know he has used it so may be he can help.

Not sure how Identical the windows version is with Linux, or the difference between the SGS and SGS EyeEye (I think the SGS EyeEye may use more files)

Grab the firmware that uses odin that you need.

    Then

This is the really really hard part - Extract that file,

    Click on the Flash Tab.

    Add your Pit file first.

Then click on the Add button. Select the file type from Partition Name, then Browse. Choose the file. Then click Add again.

This is how the files go, if you haven't worked it out yet

    FactoryFS > factoryfs.rfs
    Kernel (zImage) > zImage
    Param.Ifs > param.lfs
    IBL+PBL > boot.bin
    Secondary Bootloader > Sbl.bin
    Cache > cache.rfs
    Database Data > dbdata.rfs
    Modem > modem.bin

Once you have added all the files, I usually have SLB2, Recovery and EFS left over, but you may have files for them.

Click Remove, on the file you haven't added.

Put Phone into download mode, connect to PC, then press start.

Thanks Richard. Doomed you saved me typing a PM and apologizing for bothering you.

    Think I'm been thick!

From what I have read you ask heimdall to detect the phone, save what it finds and put that as your PIT? If not then what PIT do I use and where do I get one from? Most tars I have extracted don't have one.

Also please take another look at the files above; is it gonna cause me problems that factoryfs isn't a rfs file and what about the 'zimage' that simply says 'file' under type?

Thanks for the help, sorry about the retype.

    (1) Not to sure what your on about here, but you could make a Heimdall package from the odin files, which will require a pit file to go with it. This is to make sure you have the correct pit to go with the firmware you are flashing.

    (2) Best bet (Unless your going Custom Firmware, then see what the dev says), goto SamMobile.com, Find the firmware you want and look at what pit it needs and download.

    (3) Your using windows, which is more likely not showing the file type. 'Factoryfs' is the file name and '.rfs' is the type, its just the names you need to worry about and 'Factoryfs' should be fine

    (4) As above your interested in the name of the file.

If you didn't get the files from SamMobile.com, It will be a good idea to sign up and get them

If your still confused or I missed the point let me know.

Also I'm using Heimdall v1.3.1, looking on utube I only saw the old version.

Hi Doomed, thanks for the help. I'm using the same version of you which is why I posted. When I put the factoryfs in that partition heimdall says; 'heimdall expects an rfs file.' Leads me to think that the file I have isn't and that windows in correct when it calls it an image file? What do you think? Sorry it's taken me so long to thank, had site problems.

This is what I meant about PIT file from phone:

First thing to do would be to pull a (stock? if your still stock.. or a stock variant) a .pit file from the phone.
You can do this by going under the last tab and using the "download pit" button. To do this the phone must be connected and in download mode first.
Download and save the .pit to wherever you like on your system.

I have tried it and it seemed to generate a usable file but haven't been brave enough to flash because of other uncertainties above. Is it possible to brick a phone using Heimdall that means that CWM recovery does not work? I have read that Heimdall does not brick like odin does but there are no details.

Sorry again for all the newbie questions

I've never used that pit file feature.

What does it do when you double click the file, Should say something like unknown file type or what would you like to open the file with. If it shows a picture then it's not right

Any flashing, modifying system files, even a factory rest can brick your phone. Heimdall is meant to be safer than Odin. Most often though, you can still get into download or recovery mode and not bricked

On the factoryfs file, try renaming it to factoryfs.rfs and see if that works. Before that though, what does it do when you double click the file, Should say something like unknown file type or what would you like to open the file with. If it shows a picture then it's not right
    Don't try this yet.

When does it say "heimdall expects an rfs file",

As I've just downloaded an SGS EyeEye firmware (I9100XXKL1 3.3.6 for Europe). I also had "factoryrs.img", but didn't get any warning signs for building the package.

These are the files I've got.

    boot.bin
    cache.img
    data.img
    factoryfs.img
    hidden.img
    param.lfs
    Sbl.bin
    zImage
    modem.bin

    u1_02_20110310_emmc_EXT4.pit
If you would like to try the package. For Europe and un-tested by me. I'll see if I can upload it.

Hey, it gives the warning when I click on the file through the 'add' button after selecting factory fs as the partition. When I click on the file in windows explorer a disc image burner notice is brought up and the file is listed as factoryfs.img. I am supposed to select the partition before file selection right? So annoying that there isn't a tutorial for this version!
