Why will Galaxy S2 not update?

I have a Samsung Galaxy S2. It was purchased from Phones 4 U in the UK and therefore is not a branded phone I think. My Service provider is Orange.

I read with interest that some people are running 2.3.5 and my phone is only running 2.3.4 when I use KIES to check for updates KIES tells me that their is no update available. I have also checked via the phones software update via Wifi and again no update available.

Can anyone tell me how I can update my phone without rooting it. I have detailed below my systems settings.

    Model Number GT-I9100

    Android Version 2.3.4

    Baseband version I900XXKI1

    Kernel Version 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKI4-CL575468root@DELL143 #2

    Build Number GINGERBREAD.XWKI4

    Can anyone advise me please.

    Thank you

Enter this into the phones dial pad, like you would if you were making a phone call: *#1234# this will give you more details. Post them here and I'm sure some one will be able to help.

To use the phones update feature, which is called OVER THE AIR(OTA) and best used with a WiFi connection, you need to create a Samsung account.
Samsung Galaxy SII GT-I9100. Stock ICS LPT 4.0.4, Rooted with CF-Root. Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1, 16GB, Wi-Fi, Jelly Bean 4.1.1.

    Cannot access secret codes

    Hi

    Model Number GT-I9100

    Android Version 2.3.4

    Baseband version I900XXKI1

    Kernel Version 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKI4-CL575468root@DELL143 #2

    Build Number GINGERBREAD.XWKI4

    Unbranded currently using Tmobile PAYG

I've tried many times to dial *#1234# and other secret codes and get no info showing at all. The codes just disappear leaving the dial/ keypad ready for dialing. Any thoughts as to why I can't access secret codes?

Why does it seem that lately, people think you need to be Rooted to flash firmware

There threads about kies and updates, read them to find yourself the basically same answer

Then head over to SamMobile.com (Will need to sign up), to get everything you'll need to flash it manually

If you don't want to do/try that, I'm afraid you'll have to wait.

Like you I have an unbranded S2 from Phones4U running on 2.3.4 and it's running fine, no problems, great battery life etc. I also wondered why I wasn't able to update to 2.3.5 (either OTA or via Kies) but having learnt (on these and other forums) that 2.3.5 only gives minor tweaks and in some cases has caused problems for some S2 users I've decided that as my phone is running perfectly well on 2.3.4 I'll retain the status quo and not leap into updating to 2.3.5.

    Update:

Having just to spoken to someone at Samsung Tech Support regarding the inability to update to 2.3.5 via OTA or Kies for an unbranded phone they said that the ability to do so depends on the firmware on your phone. If your firmware is of a certain kind then you can't because (according to Tech Support) your phone doesn't need it and ergo won't let you and anyway they said it isn't a particularly major update (as we've been told here by the knowledgeable forum members) so it's not really worth it for the differences. The Tech Support guy told me that he'd be more concerned if I wasn't able to update to 'Ice Cream Sandwich' which is released (officially) later on this year.

Not sure if what I was told was a load of "spherical objects" but i just thought I'd share with you what I was told by Samsung Tech Support.

That was my next question. If I cannot upgrade to 2.3.5 will I be able to upgrade via KIES or OTA to Ice Cream Sandwich or will I need to logically go through the updates 2.3.3, 2.3.4, 2.3.5, 2.3.6 etc ....?

Shouldn't need to once it's released to you.

If it does, I'm sure it would be done in the background.
