I got my SGS a couple of months ago and I had high expectations. But I was immedieatley annoyed by its performance. It was on Froyo (2.2) and it lagged a lot. Typing was nightmare. Multitasking was impossible. I almost returned it back until I upgraded it Gingerbread (2.3.5). It runs good now, just good.

But seeing SGS II's spec, the SGS is a lot behind. 1GHz single core vs 1.2GHz dual-core, 512MB RAM vs 1GB RAM, 4.0" SAMOLED vs 4.3" SAMOLED+, RFS vs EXT4 file system... the S II just twice the phone the SGS is. Plus Samsung's intentions to bring ICS to S do not look promising. They are so obssesed with TouchWiz that they wouldn't ditch it for the sake of S.

Its because these problems that I am planning to get a SGS II in a couple of weeks. I would have gone for the Note but its not avialable yet in my country. Big screens apeal to me a lot. I owned a the XPERIA X10 and it had 4.0" screen too. Anyways I can't wait for the SGS II. I have big expectations. And I hope it will not be a disappointment. Cheers guys!
I just believe the S2 isn't enough of an upgrade to warrant not waiting for the S3. I've rooted my SGS, converted the file system to EXT4 and disabled a lot of the unnecessary background auto start processes that were activated by various events. Hence zero issue with lag here, so urgent need for better CPU. The benefits to me personally don't justify tying myself into a contract when I can get a Nexus instead which certainly does interest me, especially the better resolution.

The Eye Eye is better than the SGS, The Triple Eye will be better than the Eye Eye. Not massively so in each case but enough to see the progression.

The ONLY question that is relevant is, can I justify spending my hard-earned on another, better phone.

    That's an individual question.

I could buy an Eye Eye and sell my SGS, but I have other things I want/need instead and until I'm a multi-millionaire and can buy everything, I have chosen to wait until my contract comes to an end and then see what I can have next.

Mrs stonkr, on the other hand, is just jammy and got an Eye Eye on a technicality...
I could be wrong, I usually am. (Because it's only a phone)

    In my opinion...

The difference between a stock SGS and an SGS running a custom 2.3.6 with the ext4 filesystem, a decent Kernel and Voodoo sound is impossible to describe unless you've used both.

With that in mind, the difference between an SGS running that custom firmware and a stock SGS2 isn't that noticeable, at least in every day use.

And am I right in thinking people still use TouchWiz ?!

To me, the extra cost is in no way justifiable. (Although a camera flash would be a welcome addition).

I went into a Carphone Warehouse Store (UK) the other day to have a look at the Galaxy Note. Unfortuanately it wasn't a working model. Next to it however, was a SGS2. I had a little play with it and it was way slower than my SGS. I am running Stock 2.3.5 with Froyo Modem JPY and Speedmod Kernel K16-10. Also I am using Go Launcher Ex instead of Touch wiz. Why would I even think of upgrading to an SGS2?

Must be something wrong with that phone, The EyeEye is faster and more responsive and I would have one but as Goots said
To me, the extra cost is in no way justifiable.

I think you do need to reboot the S2 quite often. A mate in work has one and he came to me asking what was wrong with it, it was ridiculously sluggish, laggy as hell.

I found out his uptime was something in the region of 3 weeks, and after I rebooted it, it was fine, quick as it should be.

I could only imagine that the one ColinB played with in the shop was in dire need of a reboot.

It doesn't matter really as I still have 9 months to go on my contract. However when I do upgrade the new phone will have to a big jump from the SGS.
