Somewhere along the line something got corrupted, hard to say what exactly.

I would recommend reflashing new firmware using odin, then under settings> privacy run a factory reset with internal storage format.
I could be wrong, I usually am. (Because it's only a phone)

heyyy.. sorry for the late reply but i had to sit back and peacefully do this.

i tried to flash to stock firmware using odin. worked successfully but on rebooting, the apps still force-close one after the other.
i even cleared with data wipe and cache partition wipe in the recovery mode. still no luck. still not able to get to the homescreen with all the apps crashing one after another.
what is the dalvik wipe? should i try that?
what else can i try to save my phone?

Thanks for all the help provided.

For the record, here's what happened:
-Transferred Files to phone via USB storage
-Phone acted weird as it refused to detect my internal sd storage.
-Tried hard/soft reset - No files wiped, no apps wiped.
-Flashed to stock froyo using odin
-Apps started force closing since they were based on the gingerbreak firmware i had before
    -Re-flashed to gingerbread using odin
-Apps started force closing at startup and never got past the setup wizard
-Re-flashed using speedmod kernel with CWM.
    -Still the same.

Finally, gave up on my tinkering skills and took it to a repair shop.
Turns out it was a hardware issue requiring an I.C. replacement.

Just found this thread again, apologies for not getting back to you.

Hardware faults are difficult to spot.

However, much respect for trying all the above to solve the problem!
