just got phone yesterday, super noob question!

Hey guys, so my uncle sent me a Galaxy S (1) from korea yesterday, and unfortunately this phone is locked
i'm trying to unlock this thing but all cell repair places are saying that they can't unlock it because my model is M100S (or whatever the korean one is called)
one guy said i need to upgrade to i9000

so question is, i know this is suuuupper noob question but is it even possible to upgrade to i9000 or whatever..? i'm so not familiar with whole techy stuff guy said if i can figure out how to make it into i9000 he can unlock it fine

Well Yes and No.

Yes you can but it means buying a Samsung Galaxy i9000.

No you can't, as in you cannot upgrade the firmware to make your phone an i9000.

I've checked SamMobile.com and it looks like they do not support your phone's model. Also GSM Arena had this to say about the SGS A:
"Now, before you get overexcited, we have to tell you the bad news - the Samsung Galaxy A is for the Korean market only. It does have HSDPA/HSPA 3G connectivity, but instead of plotting how to smuggle it out, you might have to "settle" for the Samsung I9000 Galaxy S."
