My Galaxy S experience (wall of text)

Hey guys, had the I9000 for a couple of weeks now, and I'm happy about it and all, but I'm really disappointed because it has way more potential.

I'll mention all the worst bits:

First, straight out of the box, I had the Kies connecting issue, what a hell that was. After hours of searching and trying to solve it, I ended up wiping my SD card, taking it out the sd card, uninstalling the drivers from device manager, downloading the latest kies and finally making it work.... just to find out: No update (Bought mine in Norway, firmware I9000XWJFB)

Later I was using an application to view a podcast I like, while charging the battery (because battery was low). My I9000 got so hot, I got a warning message that "battery temperature is too high" and it stopped charging. Didn't like that too much.

Next, the live wallpapers. I love them, but the ones I like (like dandelion and quads) aren't as smooth performance wise as I'd like, and sometimes make switching between home screens choppy. I find that kind of weird on a 1Ghz processor with 512mb ram. I use advanced task killer (ATK), so I'm sure I don't have any background processes running too, odd thing is though, ATK says I only have 107M available memory when no apps are running! Does android and touchwiz use the remaining 400?

    Then there's video
I thought "finally, a device I don't need to go through conversion hell with". Wrong. No matter what video I try, it gives me "sorry, this video cannot be played" (or I download apps that can play them, with horrible performance or force close bugs).
The support for avi is nonexistant, I've yet to find an .avi movie on my hd that it can play. Where do you guys get your videos from? I honestly can't be bothered converting every show and movie I want to play on this device. And what resolution, quality and fps can it handle before it gets choppy?

The camera.... What a letdown! The focus on it misses half the time on closeup shots (my lens isn't dirty at all), and the colors are really odd indoors. Here's a pic I took today of my colleagues getting their hands on some iPhone 4s (I sell phones and gps devices). The store is pretty well lit up, but the i9000 gave it some odd pinkish hue nonetheless! http://i30.tinypic.com/m83g9y.jpg
It's only good for outdoor shots on sunny days with the sun behind you (because the camera also picks up sun glare like a motherf***)

Last but not least, the android market.
I live in Norway, we don't have access to paid apps here yet, so the selection is extremely limited. And due to the fact that Android runs (like windows) on several different hardware configurations, the apps are often buggy or aren't tweaked to the I9000 hardware!

    Conclusion:
Great piece of hardware, but horrible piece of software/firmware.

Honestly, I hate Apple, Jobs' iron grip and the apple fanboys... but iPhone 4 vs I9000: On specs they are pretty much on par, I think the iPhone 4s camera is somewhat better then the I9000, but iOS4 + iTunes is WAY more polished then Samsungs Touchwiz + Kies. Also iPhone 4 also has access to paid apps, which is a HUGE plus!

As an I9000 owner, but a phone salesman, I'm sorry to say that at its current state, iPhone 4 is the better phone. Two major reasons: OS and applications. Both are far more polished then on the galaxy S. Hopefully the Froyo update in September (crossing fingers) will fix some of the issues I'm having, and maybe google will get their shit together and let us Scandinavians access the paid market too

Either way, I'll be selling s8000 or HTC Wildfires, cos I barely get any profit selling the above mentioned phones :P

    First of all: soraxd, wow.

Battery: That sounds alarming, sounds like a faulty device/battery. I have been charging my SGS for over three hours now, using the mobile AP to supply my laptop with a wifi connection (I'm at the summer cottage) and yeah the phone feels warm to the touch, bordering on hot... But I have never had any "battery too hot" notifications... and if I did, I would run screaming back to the store. The podcast app might also be at fault here.

Kies: A horrible piece of software, almost all Samsung users seem to agree about that one. You're much better off uninstalling it. You can flash new firmware without it, easy peasy. Plus, as a bonus, when you learn about flashing and firmware you will learn a lot about your phone! There have been no official firmware updates yet, only leaked "beta" firmwares. I can recommend JG5 or the newer JM2, they are both lovely. Especially JM2 has worked very well for me.

RAM: Froyo (Android 2.2) will allow the device to see the full 512MB of RAM. Mine recognizes 326MB with JM2 firmware. Worrying about free RAM is something you shouldn't really do. Android handles the RAM, assigning it to processes and apps, and freeing up some if you need more. Task managers are useful only (mostly) for closing an app that remains active in the background after you have closed it using the back button (which means it is either poorly coded or actually designed to run in the background.)

Video: I have thrown avi and mkv at it, and I have never had any playback problems. Flashing a newer firmware might help you with this, but I'm not sure...

Market: Could you give me some examples of apps you have found buggy so I can try, just out of curiosity? Send me a PM if you want and I'll try them out on my phone!

And I agree it's strange that us Scandinavians can't see paid apps. I have personally taken the approach that since Google does not want my Scandinavian money, I'm happily getting my paid apps elsewhere, through other means.

A good, rational post. I'm really hoping you will find the answers to your questions and please do remember that this phone has just come out. Samsung are working on all the bugs and weirdness. Yes, they shouldn't have been there in the first place. If you pay 500€ for a phone, it should work perfectly. Unfortunately we don't live in La-La Land...

    Thanks for the reply!

The apps that force closed on me were some weather apps I downloaded to have on my home screen, they'd force close when I tried to open them. Uninstalled them now though, no worries.

I've flashed to 2.2 now, updated from I9000XWJFB to I9000XXJP3. Basically went from XW... both are europe, but apparently XW is the one with the norwegian language keyboard. Is there a way for me to get the Æ Ø and Å keys on the keyboard now? Don't care about the T9

I confirm that my I9000 (European SIM-free model) can play ANY video files I put in it, including HD mkv's !!! Maybe it has something to do with how you put them on the phone ? I just copy the files onto a microSD card via a computer, put the card inside the phone and it plays everything. Awesome !

The camera takes great pictures, with no auto-focus problems. Better that Nokia's 5 MP Carl Zeiss cameras. Maybe yours is deffective.

Kies is indeed a problem for everyone to connect to. I tricked mine by first connecting via "Mass storage", and then to "Samsung Kies". I advise you to set your phone to "Ask on connection" every time you connect the USB cable (Settings -> About phone -> USB settings)

I never had problems with Live Wallpapers. They work beautifully and they do not eat too much resources. Maybe your phone does have a problem...

I also get very low memory with Advanced Task Killer. Never seen more than 150 MB free. I do not know why.

All in all, Galaxy S beats the hell out of iPhone 4. But it is true that it is a little bit more complicated, for a little bit more advanced users. iPhone is idiot-proof, while Android is not. My oppinion.

Video wise, I have yet to have any .avi I have thrown at it not play perfectly.
Camera seems fine to me, although i must admit I am not much of a picture taker(probably about 1/2 dozen since owning the phone), they all have come out really nice.Kies? Well, less said the better. Will jsut say I used it once, that was more than enough.

Heh, it might sound like that, but I only mentioned the dark sides of the galaxy s.

I've never owned an iPhone, or a mac... and I'm far from an apple fanboy. The only apple device I own is a third gen ipod nano. I think my arguments are valid. I'm fine with my Galaxy S, after rooting it to 2.2 it turned out to be pretty neat. I still feel like it doesn't perform quite as well as it should with its 1Ghz processor and 512mb ram though. When you're able to play asphalt 2, you'd think you'd be able to flip through home screens smoothly while using a live wallpaper.

I definitely agree with vmoisa. It's not a phone for the casual guy. For the everyday man who wants things to work straight out of the box, and doesn't spend time google'ing how to connect galaxy S to Kies, or reading tutorials on to root their phone, the iPhone 4 is a better option. Lets be honest here, we aren't "casuals".

I haven't tried playing video files with my new firmware, maybe I was just unlucky... my phone was locked to my carrier and had an unknown firmware version running on it.

    .
I didnt receive my SGS yet, it's on the way but I'm sure that things will get much better when the official 2.2 froyo upgrade becomes available. And that's why I bought it.
Just tired of flashing al kind of devices and dont want to go rooting this one right away....

I am just surprised that an "experienced" user would even start talking about a phone like the i-Phone, wich one is abusevly overpriced, clearly less capable, a real "hype" thing...

Perhaps you, as phone seller make a good buck with it? I would be happy with it if I was in this business too...but c'mon, dont start talking about that fool's item on an Android forum, man!
